Extracurricular Activities That Impress LBS
LBS looks for people who are not only extremely motivated and highly educated but may also add something positive to the student body as a whole. Extracurriculars are your avenue to display that you have the balance in life, passion and beyond characteristics. Here's how to choose ECs that will make your application shine:
1. Align with LBS Values:
Diversity, Entrepreneurship, Responsibility and Leadership (DERL) is a key concern of LBS. Look for ECs which align with these values Maybe you worked at a microfinance organization (Responsibility + Entrepreneurship) or fought for LGBTQ+ rights on campus (Diversity + Leadership). Remember to discuss specific activities that interest you relative to your career goals and how they demonstrate the LBS spirit.
2. Show Impact, Not Just Participation:
Going through the motions won't impress LBS. Were you in leadership roles? Project led by you? Quantify your impact. How much was raised for charity through your own fundraising activities? So did the mentorship program help X number of kids? Answer those.
3. Embrace Internationality:
LBS boasts a global student body. Highlight ECs that showcase your cross-cultural understanding. Did you participate in international student exchange programs? Did you volunteer abroad? Demonstrating a global perspective aligns perfectly with LBS' focus on preparing future leaders for the interconnected world.
4. Dive Deep into a Passion:
Balance leadership roles with activities you genuinely enjoy. Maybe you're a passionate musician in a community orchestra (demonstrating commitment and teamwork). Or perhaps you're a marathon runner (showcasing discipline and perseverance).
5. Bridge the Gap to Your Career Aspirations:
Some ECs can directly connect to your career goals. Are you aiming for a career in sustainability? Perhaps your involvement in an environmental NGO demonstrates your passion and commitment to the field. Show how your ECs complement your academic and professional pursuits, painting a cohesive picture of your future trajectory.
Remember it is always quality over quantity! Focus on a few ECs where you've made a significant contribution, rather than listing a laundry list of superficial involvement.
