Finding of a survey of Systems magazine subscribers: Thirty percent of all merchandise orders placed
by subscribers in response to advertisements in the magazine last year were placed by subscribers under age
thirty-five.
Finding of a survey of advertisers in Systems magazine: Most of the merchandise orders placed in
response to advertisements in Systems last year were placed by people under age thirty-five.
For both of the findings to be accurate, which of the following must be true?

A. More subscribers to Systems who have never ordered merchandise in response to advertisements in the
magazine are age thirty-five or over than are under age thirty-five.
B. Among subscribers to Systems, the proportion who are under age thirty-five was considerably lower last year
than it is now.
C. Most merchandise orders placed in response to advertisements in Systems last year were placed by Systems
subscribers over age thirty-five.
D. Last year, the average dollar amount of merchandise orders placed was less for subscribers under age thirtyfive
than for those age thirty-five or over.
E. Last year many people who placed orders for merchandise in response to advertisements in Systems were not
subscribers to the magazine.

Found it to be a good one, initially.

IMO E.

30% Magazine Subscribers under age 35 ordered merchandise seeing the Ad while total percentage of order received under 35 years who saw the AD was more than 50% which means that many people under under the age of 35 who are not subscriber ordered merchandise.

IMO: E
Percentage of subscriber and non-subscribers make it difficult to analyze this question. Its Venn diagram problem.

Call people below age 35 are youth guys and people above 35 as old guys.

Considering, 100 people in the area put the merchandize orders.
In first case, X subscribers are surveyed ( 0<X<100).
30 % of X are youth ( call it 'l')
70% of X are old

In second case, all 100 are surveyed.
Most of them are youth who put the orders. i.e. more than 50 people(min=50, max=100) are youth. ( call this number 'm')

Comparing case I & II, Among the youth putting orders, there must be those who who have not subscribed.

For example,
m =50,
l <=30
m-l= 20 ( its minimum value)

A) Overall more than 50% are youth. So, Less people are above 35%.
B) It is not comparing between last year and this year.
C) More people with below age 35 have ordered.
D) Dollar value is not mentioned anywhere.
E) This generalization is correct.

This is a Gmat Prep question.

Explanation:

Finding of a survey of Systems magazine subscribers: Thirty percent of all merchandise orders placed by subscribers in response to advertisements in the magazine last year were placed by subscribers under age thirty-five.

30% Order placed = Under 35 years of age.

Finding of a survey of advertisers in Systems magazine: Most of the merchandise orders placed in response to advertisements in Systems last year were placed by people under age thirty-five.

Greater than 50% order Placed = Under 35 years of age.

The difference of more than 20% should be accounted by those people who are less than 35 years of age and are non-Subscribers.

I picked E...by POE it's very hard to understand the argument....I like gummybear explanation

Premise 1: Subscribers...... 35 years old or younger...... accounted for 30% of the orders
Premise 2: 35 years old or younger..... accounted for most of the orders
Therefore many orders were placed by non subscribers.

I just miss out the subscribers and advertisers...gosh
thx a lot!

(A) More subscribers to Systems who have never ordered merchandise in response to advertisements in the magazine are age thirty-five or over than are under age thirty-five. -extreme option-
(B) Among subscribers to Systems, the proportion who are under age thirty-five was considerably lower last year than it is now. -argument has never talked about the proportions, so irrelevant-
(C) Most merchandise orders placed in response to advertisements in Systems last year were placed by Systems subscribers over age thirty-five. -Ask yourself, based upon the argument, can you firmly answer this? NO-
(D) Last year, the average dollar amount of merchandise orders placed was less for subscribers under age thirty-five than for those age thirty-five or over.-Irrelevant-
(E) Last year many people who placed orders for merchandise in response to advertisements in Systems were not subscribers to the magazine.

By POE, Correct option is E

Survey of System Magazine Subscribers - This is within the subscribers
Total Orders by Subscribers = 100
by LT35Yrs = 30
by GT35Yrs = 70

Now other survey done by advertisers, say Coke - this survey includes all buyers, Subscribers + Non-Subscribers
Coke found that - of total, say 1000, Orders
Most (>50%) Orders are from LT35Yrs = 501
Others from GT35Yrs = 499

Looking at the numbers, we can say that Not all LT35Yrs Buyers (=501) of Coke are also LT35Yrs subscribers (=30) of System Magzine

Quote:
(E) Last year many people who placed orders for merchandise in response to advertisements in Systems were not subscribers to the magazine.

I am just putting this in my own words, but thanks for gummybear for providing framework to understand this question.
