Hello all,

I am preparing to write the GMAT in the middle of December, and began my journey two weeks ago.

I mainly went over the MGMAT Math foundations and the Road Map to success book, and decided to do a CAT to see where I stand and what I should focus on for the next 2 monhts.

My results:
660 (Q:41, V39)

My Quant score is very low and I need to bring that up. However, I was surprised by the 660 score. Is this inflated? How much stock can I put into this?

Any recommendations on how to approach this first CAT score with no real studying would be appreciated. I know I should be happy, but quite frankly this puts some doubt in my head about the validity of the CATs.

Also, I was surprised to see my results on SC, which was my best section. My average difficulty of right answers was 700. This was shocking as I am clueless when it comes to rules in grammar. I just went with my gut on those. I read in the MGMAT books that if you are able to score in the 700s on SC, you should not learn the rules - as it may lower your score. Is this correct?

Any recommendations on how to approach this first CAT score with no real studying would be appreciated. I know I should be happy, but quite frankly this puts some doubt in my head about the validity of the CATs.

Hi,

The MGMAT scores are generally a good indicator of your current state, so you should be happy instead of thinking about the ingenuity of the CAT.
Having said this, yes the Verbal section of MGMAT is a bit easy and the QA section is a tad difficult.

I would suggest you to solve a GMAT Prep CAT to find out your real standing and from there you can start off with your preparation as you will be knowing the sections to focus on.

Also, it is never harmful to learn rules, so go ahead and learn them, they will be beneficial only and will not harm your score

Regards,
Ankur

Much appreciated.

I was always under the impression that the GMAC tests should be saved by all costs for after you are done studying and need to fine tune things.

Is it a waste to do one of the GMAC CATs as a diagnostic, or is it generally considered helpful?

The first GMAT Prep should be considered as a base line test for your preparation, there after you can give the second one after you have prepared.
Also you can reset the status of the tests, as it has a large pool of questions, so you can give it two more times.

So to simplify, you can give the GMAT Prep test 4 times

P.S. there is a better way to say thanks in GMAT CLUB world ... the kudos button
Please press it if I helped you!!

Ankur
