Hi, Austro22,

Thank you for your post!

First, I would like to congratulate you on backing a 750 in GMAT; that's quite exceptional and highlights your prowess in dealing with numbers which again is a self-representation of how good you are at a professional level, being a major in accounting. Coming to your GPA, it's decent; however, I suggest you add more to your statistics during your graduation and try to add any additional courses, certifications, and academic accolades won. About your work experience, it's comparatively less, so you would need to back them up with substantial examples of excellence in the field, decision-making, and analytical skills in your tenure. Moreover, since the average work experience starts from 3 years and you are just above the mark by a few months, you need to be extremely clear on how an MBA can help you reach your goals and mention your motivation/driving force, your aspirations, and finally, why you think it's a good choice for you to go for an MBA now and you have relevant skills to be successful!

Coming to ECAs, you have some good ones but need to add some relevant volunteering and community work away from professional work and graduation; even some hobbies will do. Mention your contribution, the challenges faced, leadership roles played, the impact generated, and the relevant skills developed through your ECAs to bank upon them! You can also add about any college experience/exposure, which is greatly valued at this level and would provide new horizons to explore in front of the adcom!

Overall, you have a decent profile, and further, your post-MBA goals are quite Collinear in a manner, so you only need to work on your long term post-MBA goals. The HWS trio could be a stretch for anybody, but we are quite confident about your profile for CBS and Booth. Moreover, we would help you step by step to build a strong profile aligned with the school values and help draft essays that would mesmerize the adcom. At present, I would need more information on your work experience to present the lack of years positively and try to build up substantially on it! However, If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further help you with shortlisting MBA programs; feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.

Let's prepare a 2-month action plan for Round 1

Cheers!

Hi All,

I'll be applying to Columbia ED, I hope this increases my chances.

Background

Undergrad/Major: Global Top 150 University, Majoring in Accounting 3.98 GPA

Race/Nationality: White, Australian

Work Experience: 2.5 Years (3.5 when I'd start studying) in MBB firm. Spent 1.5 years in our public sector practice, mainly on policy, asset commercialisation and org restructures. Spent the last year or so in our Private Equity (Due Diligence) team

Extracurriculars: At university - I founded our case competition team and competed in 3 international case competitions. I also volunteered as the head of finance for a non-profit (helped young people, particularly low-SES get financial literacy skills) for a year. Also had 2 6-month full time internships (investment banking in the PE team and insolvency/transactions consulting) and worked in strategy at a biotech company for a total of 9 months. While at the MBB firm my ECs have been founding and leading our Low-SES diversity group, supporting the Learning and Development team as a learning facilitator and mentoring university students in consulting clubs etc.

GMAT: 750 (Q50|V41) with full marks in the IR and AWA

Short term goal: Return to my MBB firm in the private equity practice (preferably in NYC).

Goals/Why MBA? Want to use MBA to gain formal education in private equity as it is my main focus area. I want to drive greater diversity and inclusion of people from low-SES backgrounds in the PE sector having grown up in a low-SES environment myself. Long-term this would be a role at a PE firm ideally driving like an impact investments team.

Schools: Columbia, Wharton, Stanford, Booth, Harvard

Any advice to improve my profile is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks in advance to all who take the time to read and comment.

I really like your chances at ISB and Judge.

CBS, LBS and INSEAD are still within reach but are going to be a bit harder given their more selective nature. I don't have a good sense for your career results so far, though that doesn't mean you don't have a strong performance. That will have to come through in your CV/resume, essays, and recommendation letters.

ECs look good but it's hard to tell if they are more pastimes than community-building activities.

Lastly, if you are going to go the consulting route for both your ST and LT goals, you are going to need to find an interesting angle regarding the impact you will have on such organizations. You are coming from a common demographic, so you need to identify a unique career path so you can effectively separate yourself from the pack.

Hope that helps! If you want to discuss this further, don't hesitate to reach out for a free consultation using this link:

It looks like you will be a very strong candidate for Columbia's MBA program. Your focus on the intersection of health and tech will be impressive, as long as you write the best possible essays outlining your interest and post-MBA objectives. Speaking of which, you probably need to better define your long-term goal. Investing is in general a good start, but you need a more specific ambition around a position, fund/company, vision, etc.

Overall, you are in great shape. Consider applying Early Decision is Columbia is your top choice. At the very least apply sooner rather than later to take advantage of the rolling admissions.

As you are preparing for MBA, I would really to tell you that for Top B-Schools like Insead, Columbia, LBS, you really have to give a GMAT.
You have not mentioned anything about GMAT so I am considering you must have taken that yet. So, I would recommend you to start preparing for GMAT.
GRE is more focused on MS Degree, so it really doesn’t matter in your case as you are going for MBA.

So, in my opinion, the GMAT appears to be required for a business programme abroad. Especially in a country like the United States, where a Masters degree means much more than a degree. Some major institutes, however, do not require you to submit a GMAT score. They are, of course, fewer in number. Working graduates who do not want to put in the extra effort of taking a standardised test prefer these institutes. And, by far, the educational quality at any of the aforementioned business schools is exceptional. In fact, Kellogg offers an Executive MBA programme that does not require a GMAT score.
Here are the best schools across countries that don't require a GMAT score:
USA
    University of Seattle
    Adelphi University
    California Miramar University
    Canada
    University of Regina
    Brock University
    University of Saskatchewan
UK
    University of Leeds
    King's College London
    University of Manchester
Now, these institutes might not require a GMAT score but there are other requirements that you must fulfil like a minimum bachelors' GPA, IELTS/TOEFL Score etc.
You should check your overall profile and get an idea if you match all the other requirements if you wish to skip the GMAT.
Other than that you have a decent profile, and Academically, you have a good marks which showcases your academic power. While your grades do play an important part, your extracurricular activities and your other endeavours matter as well because AdComs are looking for applicants with holistically developed profiles.

Not only this your work experience also plays an important in your application process. As far as your work experience goes, since an MBA is a manager's degree and requires significant work experience, your 3+ years of work experience would be decent. In order to stand out from the crowd, you most certainly should focus on your GMAT and major projects of your work and how these experiences helped to develop and further groom your skills and knowledge. Since you have some big brands like Dell in your work experience, this will definitely benefit you and showcase an equally competitive profile.

Extracurricular + Achievements: Your extracurriculars are decent. It definitely showcases your hard-working skills as you have won several medals.
You just need to make a killer application highlighting all your skills explaining why you are the perfect candidate.
Make your application unique so that it stands out of the crowd.

If you would like, we can help you with essays and SOPs and other application processes.

Hi, looking for some chance assessments of my current profile, Pleases kindly evaluate my profile, thank you!

targeting class of 2025 CBS(ED, 1st-time applicant), Booth(R1, reapply), Wharton (R1, reapply), got an interview with Booth in the last application cycle but was denied.

My major concern is GPA might be kinda low since M7's average is around 3.6, and feel like the overall profile is not strong enough.

some personal info:
25 years old Taiwanese male,
GRE 329 (V160, Q169) (GMAT 740 equivalent according to the ETS converter), GPA 3.4 from top 20 US undergrad, econ& math and music double major, completed in 3.5 years.

5 years working exp upon matriculation: 0.5 year in the family construction business as a project manager oversaw on-site construction projects. 3 years in Top 5 local IB as an analyst completing several IPO deals including 1 international client, performing intensive due diligence, and financial modeling. 1.5 years in Global fortune 500 IB ( top 3 in the region) as an associate also doing IPOs with similar tasks but more reponsibility.

Start-up experience: 2.5 years- established a personal golf equipment retail business for club-retailing, custom fitting and personal coaching. annual revenue around 30K USD. Also a golf avid and single-digit handicapper shooting in the high 70s.

Ex curriculum:
undergrad: University Symphony Orchestra 1st Violin(3.5 years), Chamber music society string quartet 1st violin (3 years), local meditation center meditation lesson mentor and volunteer leader organizing volunteer events (3.5 years), school baseball club vice-captain, starting short-stop, orgaining training sessions and freshman recruiting(3 years)
post-undergrad: local meditation center meditation lesson mentor, volunteer leader organizing volunteer events, annual celebrating events music director and performance segment leader(total a group of 100 in front of a 20K audience) (4 years), joint sponsor golf club fitting events: team up with local golf coaches to give free swing and equipment assessment to pros and amateurs, also as a way to expand customer bases for my startup (2 years), local softball team vice-captain and starting short-stop (2 years)

STG: I will continue working in the investment banking industry. I always feel accomplished when I successfully assist my clients in expanding their operation size and reaching groundbreaking results through capital raising in the capital market. Having only worked in the smaller Taiwanese capital market, I have had limited opportunities to participate in bigger deals and work with international clients. In the next three to five years, I want to work as vice president at bulge bracket IBs in New York such as Morgan Stanley or Goldman Sachs, and strive to launch IPOs for international unicorns. With solidified financial and business fundamentals, I will deploy my financial modeling and deal pitching skills together with a solid understanding of the IPO launching process to bring in big deals for my company. On the other hand, I will keep running my golf equipment retail start-up, but more as a recreational side-hustle that I can do in my free time, as my full-time career in IB will require the majority of my focus.

LTG: I will continue my career in both the IB and sports industries. Within fifteen years I will return to the Taiwanese market and become a top management member and eventually the CEO of one of the larger local investment banking firms in the region. I want to expand the local market size by attracting and listing more international clients in Taiwan as a way to facilitate the process of loosening rules regarding to public listing. The Taiwanese government posts very strict regulations in relation to pre-listing companies’ earning tests, thus greatly limiting IPO possibilities for start-ups with negative earnings and resulting in start-ups refusing to list in Taiwan, such as electrical motorcycle manufacturer Gogoro Inc. The Taiwanese stock exchange welcomes international IPOs, but in order to attract more such listings, they must loosen up IPO rules case by case; therefore, I believe, after ten years of solid multi-billion deal experience in the international market, I can introduce more international clients and structure different IPO deal types such as SPAC and direct listing, which are not offered in Taiwan, to create a more dynamic market.

Meanwhile, working closely with the IB clients will complement my management and marketing skill sets and allow me to run and scale up my own enterprise, with the end goal of listing the company publicly. Besides growing my equipment-retailing business, I want to build two more sports-related companies, including a player agency specifically dedicated to representing Eastern Asian athletes. I want to help players establish their international reputations by enabling them to compete in more premier tournaments and possibly secure international sponsorship. Over time I will consider creating a tournament planning company designed to increase the number of tournaments held in greater Asia. Many Asian players struggle to get international recognition due to limited opportunities for tournament appearances. I believe my combined future enterprises can provide a comprehensive and integrated platform for talented players and will allow me to significantly raise the global profile of Asian golf and its players.

Hey,
You have a pretty good profile.

Academically, you have a good GPA which showcases your academic power. You should not worry about your GPA. Speaking of your GMAT score of 740, it would definitely work in your favour as it further illustrates your academic capabilities, allowing you to apply to most of the top colleges. While your grades do play an important part, your extracurricular activities and your other endeavours matter as well because AdComs are looking for applicants with holistically developed profiles. That said, your volunteering and leadership roles all showcase your strong interest in developing your profile holistically by highlighting your ability to take up initiatives, impact others and to empathize with other people. B-schools are looking for applicants that are future leaders and such experiences and qualities strengthen your application. To further improve your profile you could take up certifications to bolster your extracurriculars and build a holistic profile.

Not only this your work experience also plays an important in your application process. As far as your work experience goes, since an MBA is a manager's degree and requires significant work experience, your 5+ years of work experience would put you at par with other applicants.

You have a very strong profile. That what Adcoms want.

You just need to make a killer application highlighting all your skills explaining why you are the perfect candidate.
Make your application unique so that it stands out of the crowd.

4 years work experience: 1 year internship at a Fortune50 medical company. 1 year working as a data science analyst for a Big4 consulting firm supporting strategy teams. 2 years at a boutique specialist (healthcare ~100 people) strategy firm working directly with large firm C-suite. Currently a manager of their data team overseeing 3-4 consultants - have PMed large projects with high visibility and foresee strong letters of reference.
I have 2 years of full-time church volunteering experience for my church in Japan (teaching English, teaching about Christianity, translating for local Brazilian congregations etc). I also volunteer doing pro-bono consulting for smaller start ups internationally.

I've taken the GMAT (got 710) but planning to take again soon, aiming for 730+.
I have decent hopes but working in a niche healthcare space and not coming from a large feeder firm.
My interests after graduation are the cross section of AI and healthcare, medical devices and entrepreneurship.

Questions (aside from any profile feedback!)
- What are my chances and what resonates most with Columbia admissions?
- In my most recent practice tests I just can't do well in Quant under test conditions for the life of me; currently fluctuating between 55th-75th percentile in Q, but consistently 95th+ percentile in Verbal and 8+/12 in IR (730-740 range). Is this going to be a deal breaker? Given that I do quant modeling all day is that going to offset this issue with my GMAT?

Thanks all!

Hi tgubbay1, before getting to your profile evaluation, let’s start by answering your queries

Q1. What are my chances and what resonates most with Columbia admissions?
Columbia ranks 2nd in world’s best MBA schools, so you can just imagine the competition you will get there. On the plus side, graduating from a top MBA school will definitely benefit you in your career.

Columbia’s MBA program requirement is as follows:
GMAT- 729
Work experience- 3-8 years
GPA- 3.5

As I can see you meet most of the requirement of Columbia, I’d say your chances at Columbia are pretty decent.

Q2. In my most recent practice tests I just can't do well in Quant under test conditions for the life of me; currently fluctuating between 55th-75th percentile in Q, but consistently 95th+ percentile in Verbal and 8+/12 in IR (730-740 range). Is this going to be a deal breaker? Given that I do quant modeling all day is that going to offset this issue with my GMAT?

I see you have been struggling with your GMAT’s Quant section, first of all you don’t need to panic, it's not a major problem that cannot be resolved.
I’d suggest taking help of your friend or mentor who has gone through the same journey.
Secondly we do provide free GMAT classes, if you would like to enroll with us, we’d be happy to help you.

I hope this answers your questions.
Now coming to your overall profile, your association with known brands will definitely be beneficial.
Explain your roles and responsibilities you held in your organisation.

Your years of volunteering will definitely help you get into Columbia, do not forget to mention that in your SOP.

Overall I’d say you have a pretty good chance of getting into Columbia, you need to present yourself strongly in your application and draft a killer application Columbia cannot refuse

If you would like, we can help you with essays and SOPs and other application processes.

Hi siddhant8,

Thanks for sharing your profile. First, I would like to congratulate you on achieving 760 in GMAT; it is quite impressive. I would suggest you add more about additional courses or certifications you have undertaken.

Regarding your work experience, adcoms usually look for diversification in a profile. However, it is important to highlight different roles and responsibilities associated with your work. Schools like CBS look for intellect, curiosity, and dynamism. You would need to describe the impact your work created on the firm, your career progression and your leadership qualities of yours. Hence, we would like to learn more about your work experience.

Coming to your ECs and social activities, you can highlight your teaching role associated with NGOs and also elaborate on managing volunteers. Sports activities and your association with music will help your profile stand out.

All in all, your profile looks decent. Your post-MBA goal seems quite generic; you will need to elaborate on your short and long-term goals and align them with how the school will help you achieve them. Recently we have helped applicants to get into Columbia with scholarships in ED rounds. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length. Feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.

Your profile looks good to me.
If I talk about your academic abilities, your bachelor’s GPA of 3.76 and your class 12th percentage of 97.8 shows that you have a very well-put-together and academically groomed profile.
Even your GMAT score is really exceptional. Majority of the top b-schools accept an average 720 GMAT Score so your 760 GMAT score is top-notch.
Apart from academics and entrance test scores, the other aspects that add value to your profile are extracurriculars, work experience, and your language test scores.
Since you haven’t mentioned any language test score, I assume you haven’t taken any yet. So, I suggest you take the most commonly accepted one i.e IELTS. Keep a target of scoring around 8.0 band and only then would you be able to score around 7.0-7.5 which is a safe and most accepted score.
Coming towards your work experience and extra curricular, you should know that only having a great work ex won’t make a difference until you actually showcase in a manner that all your roles and responsibilities, your skills, your ability to overcome weaknesses and any other obstacles are actually the key points of your overall holistic profile.
I’m saying this because Adcoms are not just looking for intelligent people but looking for smart people and that needs to be showcased in your profile. An otherwise excellent profile would get rejected if the application does not include all the relevant things. So you need to make sure that you draft a killer application and make sure you get that dream admit.

If you would like, we can help you with essays and SOPs and other application processes.

IndianMLMentor750:

Yes, you should be a candidate for Columbia and other top programs (I note this because I have seen several postings across other school forums.)

The tricky thing for you is your competitive demographic. You have solid scores and a well-rounded profile, so I think you'll be in the mix but it can be unfortunately a little random for Indian males. Therefore, you should consider a range and a decent number of schools for R1 and R2, if possible.

Let us know if we can be of help. Our team is standing by if you want our assistance.
