Five fledgling sea eagles left their nests in western Scotland this summer, bringing to 34 the number of wild birds successfully raised since transplants from Norway began in 1975.

(A) bringing
(B) and brings
(C) and it brings
(D) and it brought
(E) and brought

[Reveal] Spoiler:
OG says "D) There are too many possible referents for it."

1. Can anyone point those referents
2. Also it can acts a placeholder for the action and in that case construction is correct (although i agree that A would be more precise)

it here may be ref to either western Scotland or summer as these two are the only singular existing...
IMO choice D is wordy ...moreover, for it to function as a placeholder, there are certain conditions for e.g
1) to postpone infinitive
2) to postpone THAT clause...n so on..
n since it is doing none of these functions, it is not required..
Also choice A is a classical example of verb+ ing modifier that is showing the result of the action of the preceding clause...
thats my 2 cents on this..

ok here are the examples
1) To postpone infinitive subjects...e.g. To eat Fast food is not a good habit
now here, the infinitive (TO EAT FAST FOOD, which is also the subject) is postponed with the use of placeholder IT .....
It is not a good habit to eat fast food.
the original sentence has no grammatical error, but the GMAC rejects it because it is not written in a stylish manner.
2) To postpone That clause...e.g That we all scaled the mountain gave us confidence.....
Again, That-clause similar to the infinitives will be postponed with the use of placeholder IT .....
It gave us confidence that we all scaled the mountain...
3) It sounds awkward when a sentence starts with an infinitive or That-clause and it is logical to postpone them on stylish grounds. Similarly, we can also postpone infinitive and that clause when they appear as objects in the sentence.
now if we see the original question, we can easily delete choice D on stylish grounds.
Also plz check ur inbox, i have fwd a page on placeholder IT.
Correct me if i am wrong.

(A) bringing - Correct Choice
(B) and brings - and brings forms a clause for which there will be no subject
(C) and it brings - it does not refer to any noun/pronoun clearly
(D) and it brought - it does not refer to any noun/pronoun clearly
(E) and brought - Awkward clause formation by the use of "and brought"

(D) and it brought
(E) and brought

The confusion here is in A and E but it becomes clear once you look at the meaning. The eagles leaving and bringing are not happening simultaneously BUT because the eagles left the number of wild birds was raised.

Anyone can correct if my reasoning is wrong.

Five fledgeling sea eagles left their nests in western Scotland this summer, bringing to 34 the number of wild birds successfully raised since transplants from Norway began in 1975.
In this sentence, "BRINGING" is modifying the act "Five fledgling sea eagles leaving their nests" presented in previous sentence, a correct use.

Kindly note that "Leaving the nests" and "Change in number to 34" are not two DIFFERENT acts. Hence use of AND is incorrect in remaining options. Moreover, use of IT is incorrect to refer an ACT "Leaving the nests".

Hope the explanation is helpful

Five fledgling sea eagles left their nests in western Scotland this summer, bringing to 34 the number of wild birds successfully raised since transplants from Norway began in 1975.

(A) bringing - Correct
(B) and brings - Subject verb agreement issue - eagles brings
(C) and it brings - Pronoun it tries to refer to the entire action
(D) and it brought - Pronoun it tries to refer to the entire action
(E) and brought - the Eagles themselves didn't directly bring the number to 34; they left their nests, and that action (of leaving the nest) brought the number to 34. so, the birds didn't directly bring the number up to 34, but they are clearly the ones most proximately responsible for that increase.

Answer A
