going for E....

A. Five hundred million different species of living creatures have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent of them vanishing.
--- run on so out

B. Nearly 99 percent of five hundred million different species of living creatures that appeared on Earth have vanished.
--- present perfect is preferred over past tense.

C. Vanished are nearly 99 percent of the five hundred million different species of living creatures that appeared on Earth.
--- awkward construction

D. Of five hundred million different species of living creatures that have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent of them have vanished.
--- 'them' is unnecessary. 'the' is missing

E. Of the five hundred million different species of living creatures that have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent have vanished.
--- somehow I feel 'that have appeared on earth' is better than 'that appeared' although bit confused.

E. Mainly to test the usage "the"

Of the five hundred million different species of living creatures.

Should be E.
Only B came close but as mentioned misses article "the" before first "of".

I believe it is (D).
Could someone explain why this would be less preferable to (E).

I second D here...

I thought we need a possessive pronoun in objective form is needed here "them"

I believe the pronoun 'them' is clarified when it states "Of the five..." rather than "Of five million..."

It also sounds slightly more lucid than D, so i vote for E. However, they both appear to be very close...
