Following the best project management practices is believed to improve project success. However, even after training the entire project team on the best project management practices last month, the monthly project deliverables were late. Obviously, our project team failed to learn from training.

Which of the following,if true, would most weaken the conclusion above?

A. Effects of following the best project management practices often show up after a few months of application.
B. Projects team that have undergone the best management training often miss monthly deadlines.
C. The monthly project deliverables last month were later only by 2 days, an insignificant duration that could not really have impacted project success.
D. Although the best project management practices generally improve project success, there are exceptions.
E. The delay was because of external dependencies and the project team did not have any control over those factors.

The 2 of the 5 choices are equally plausible and weakening the conclusion. Can you help me how to eliminate either of them?

Thanks

IMO
the answer choice E weakens the premise on which the conclusion depends.
where as A directly attacks the conclusion.

You are right. Both the choices do weaken it someway or the other, we have to chose the best from the better, i guess.

The question asks to weaken the conclusion.
In some cases it may ask to weaken the argument on which the conclusion depends

I was surprised to see the answer as A! My reasoning is as follows:

Question Type: Weaken

Premise : Following best project management practices improve the project success.
Conclusion: A team, which was trained on those practices failed to deliver the project on time.
Note here that, nowhere in the question it is mentioned that the team applied/followed these practices. Assuming this might be one of the weakeners, we will eliminate each of the answer choices.
A. Does not relate to the conclusion. Did the team apply the practices? No, We cannot infer that from the question. Eliminate A.
B. Does not attack our conclusion. Conclusion is, though the training is provided, the delivery is not improved
C. Again, does not attack our conclusion. All we worry about is the link between training and delivery must be broken.
D. Okay, now we have a viable option. D says there might be exceptions. But is this project team one of those exceptions? Drop D.
E. The delay was because of external dependencies. Okay, now the delay is not because of the lack of effectiveness of the training, but because of other external dependencies. Choose E.

Is there any flaw in my reasoning?

Choice E- The conclusion is not about the delay that was caused but rather why. And author assumes here that lack of efficient training is the reason for those delays.

We need to attack the assumption.
Assumption: inefficient learning from the training ( stated in the argument)

Weaken: The learnings take time to be practically applied and the effect is shown only after few months.
