(1) The sales tax on the charge for labor was $9.60.
(2) The total sales tax was $12.60.

Kudos for a correct solution.

Set up the equation. Let the charge for parts be P and the charge for labor be L. The question asks:

Total = P + L + 0.06P + 0.06L = ?
Total = 50 + L + 0.06*50 + 0.06L = ? (P is already given)

1) Gives you the value for L, hence sufficient
2) 12.60 = 0.06*50+0.06L, from this you can calculate the Value for L and hence the total too

P = Charge for parts = 50$
L = Charge for labor
T = Total Cost

T = P + L + (0.06)P + (0.06)L

St1: 0.06L = 9.6 --> L = 9.6/0.06 --> Sufficient
St2: 0.06P + 0.06L = 12.16 --> We get the value of L --> Sufficient

Answer: D

Sir:
while the question is straight forward.
How can you be sure that the sales tax on charge labor is 6%.
In the question stem, it is given 6 percent sales tax on both charge for parts and charge for labor.
Individually, the sales tax can vary for charge part Vs. charge for labor.

Or by default, the sales tax even if mentioned for both the items, it never varies for individual items?

Please share your thoughts.
Thanks in advance.

P=$50, Charge = L + P + 6/100(L+P)
1. 6/100*L=$9.6 L can be found out so, Sufficient
2. 6%(L+P)=$12.6 P can be calculated so sufficient

We need to find : P+L+0.06P+0.06L

We are given P=50 so we can find 0.06P. So it boils down to finding L.

Statement 1:

0.06L=9.6$. We can find L from it. So we can find the total.

Statement 2:
0.06P+0.06L=12.6 But we already know 0.06P that in turns means we can find 0.06L and that makes it exactly like statement 1.

Hence Each alone is sufficient.

(2) The total sales tax was $12.60.

Kudos for a correct solution.

Solution:

Question Stem Analysis:

We need to determine the total charge of a certain car repair given that this charge consisted of a charge for parts, a charge for labor, and a 6 percent sales tax on both the charge for parts and the charge for labor. We are already given the charge for parts (excluding sales tax) and sales tax rate; so if we can determine the charge for labor (regardless of whether the amount includes sales tax), we can determine the total charge.

Statement One Alone:

We see that $9.60 is 6% of the charge for labor; therefore, the charge for labor (excluding sales tax) is 9.6/0.06 = $160. Since we’ve determined the charge of labor, we can determine the total charge. Statement one alone is sufficient.

Statement Two Alone:

Since the charge for parts (excluding sales tax) is $50, the sales tax on the charge for parts is 50 x 0.06 = $3. Since the total sales tax was $12.60, the sales tax on the charge for labor is 12.6 - 3 = $9.60 We see that this is identical to the information from statement one. Therefore, statement two alone is also sufficient also.
