Wrong Modifier for England... Sounds like England began in 1778 and existed for 100 years...

(C) Beginning a period of almost a hundred years, in 1788

(D) During a hundred years, a period beginning in 1788,

(E) Over a period of a hundred years beginning in 1788,

Its a modifier problem... Did England begin in 1778 over a period of 100 years? No...

The modifier should modify the act of "exile" not England.

It would probably be ok if it were :

Beginning in 1778 for a period of a hundred years, exiles numbering more than 160,000 were sent off to Australia from England.
Even here exiles should be taken as a verb rather than a noun.

Late, but "0ver a period of" correctly describes a spance in time during which a specific action takes place.

Will there be any change in meaning if "Over" in option E is replaced with "During"?

Also in option E "beginning" modifier is jumping over to modify "period". Is this ok?

If yes, what are the scenarios in which an -ing modifier (without preceding comma) can jump over to modify non-touching noun?
