Re: For how many integral values of x, the expression x^2 – 7x -2 is less [#permalink]
Hi in your solution (x-6)(x-1)>0
hence x>6 and x>1
but you have written x<1.
Am I missing something?

For how many integral values of x, the expression x^2 – 7x -2 is always less than 6 and greater than -8?

A) 0
B) 1
C) 2
D) 3
E) 4

Solution-

x^2-7x-2<6
x^2-7x-8<0
x^2-8x+x-8<0
(x+1)(x-8)<0

so -1<x<8, x= 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7 (8 values)

x^2-7x-2>-8
x^2-7x+6>0
x^2-6x-x+6>0
(x-1)(x-6)>0

x<1 and x>6

Values of X remain from above

x= 0, 7

so only 2 values of x will satisfy the conditions.
Answer is C.
