capability often refers to one's maximum ability, to one's limits of capacity for doing/accomplishing something;

on the other hand, ability is more applicable to the generic, non-quantifiable quality of being able to do something/capable of doing something

Ability is closer to a talent, a natural skill which is hard to quantify, whereas capability is more applicable to enterprizes, rather than persons, or, if it is applied to a person, it may more often reflect on limitations, rather than talents.

A. We need ability.
B. Awkward construction.
C. Correct. Ability to is the correct idiom.
D. Subject verb agreement.
E. Same as A.

This one is very easy because "for making profits" is unidiomatic. Only C has the correct idiom.

There's a pronoun issue in C. What's "their" referring to? The sentence could be interpreted as if there's a 3rd party involved.

But I do get the point about their "capability for" ...

their can only refer to the investor .It had no other antecedent .There is no scope for assumption when there is a clear noun which it refers to .Hope it helps.

A) Foreign investors, because of their growing confidence in their capability for making profitable investments in the United States, have been led
misplaced modifier;have been led is modifying foreign investors-incorrect
(B) Foreign investors, growing confident about their capability for making profitable investments in the United States, has led them
"them" -has no/vague antecedent - incorrect
(C) Growing confidence in their ability to make profitable investments in the United States has led foreign investors
correct choice ; proper usage -"ability for" ; "Growing confidence..... has led"
(D) Growing confidence in their ability for making profitable investments in the United States have led foreign investors
incorrect- "ability for" ; have led is incorrect with growing confidence
(E) Growing confident about their capabilities for making profitable investments in the United States, foreign investors have been led
incorrect- "ability for" ; have been -wrong / unnecessary tense

(C) wins

"capability for making profitable investments" is rather awkward... Hence, eliminate A and E.
"ability to make profits" is better...

(A) Foreign investors, because of their growing confidence in their capability formaking profitable investments in the United States, have been led
(E) Growing confident about their capabilities for making profitable investments in the United States, foreign investors have been led

"Has led them" is pointing to itself... "Foreign investors has led them" - Confusing isn't it? Hence, eliminate B.

(B) Foreign investors, growing confident about their capability for making profitable investments in the United States, has led them

(D) Growing confidence ... have led foreign investors - must be singular

(C) Growing confidence in their ability to make profitable investments in the United States has led foreign investors

We need the subject " growing confidence", not "foreign investors" have been led. Left with C, D, and E. C is the best choice since "ability to" is idiomatic, "ability for doing sth" and " growing confident about" are not preferred.

Easy one. Only option C has the correct idiom "ability to".
