I just wrote my first draft of my first essay to Duke Clearly I did not realize how difficult these essays were going to be. Duke essays have no word limit but the suggested word limit for essay 1 is 1000 words, after multiple revisions I was able to bring my essay down from 1688 to 1371 words. Is the extra 371 words going to be a problem? I plan on doing multiple revisions but I am concerned that but cutting out stuff I make the essay loose it's flow. Your advice is greatly appreciate

I'd recommend trying to trim it down some more. Like you said, there's no official limit, but they clearly would like you to be close to 1000 if they give that guideline. I'd try to get within 10% of that.

I know it seems impossible, but I have never seen an essay that I couldn't trim down by at least 10%! Keep the focus on you and the present, not on your company, your industry, what you did back in high school, etc.

Also, remember that adcomms each read HUNDREDS of apps. If you can say something in 1000 words instead of 1400, they really appreciate it! Don't bore them to death.

Quick plug: Also, our MBA Game Plan essay service can help you if you're trying to trim your word count!
