maybe your foundation isn't up to par

go to your bookstore and grab the powerscore sc and study the foundation of grammar portion of the book

Thank you. I'll try that. I did read about the theory behind the 9 main types of qs from the various books, but I guess I just have a hard time applying them when it comes to solving a problem. I usually resort to intuition and what "sounds" right.

Thanks for both of your help. I just did a practice test from Manhattan GMAT and found myself blanking out on the Verbal portion. I had to read passages 5 or 6 times before I even had a vague understanding of what's going on. I'm guessing this is probably due to fatigue from the AWA and Math. Does anyone experience something similar?

Are there any strategies to mitigate this? Does eating a snack/splashing water on face help?

Well this seems like you have problems with reading and understanding the topic. This is a problem you cannot overcome overnight. From my personal experience, this problems occurs when your mind think many things while reading. Either you start thinking about something else, any sort of problem or happy movement in life, which your mind try to link with the passage you are reading (even one second of diversion from topic takes everything out of the short memory) or you try to read fast and try to skim the passage (read slow even if it takes double the time, it still save time then reading 5 or 6 times)
This needs some serious reading practice. My suggestion at this time when you have few days for the exam. Give rest to your mind and when you read any question, forget everything in this world and just involve yourself in reading that. I am sure this will help you little bit at this moment, and if you feel eating snacks or splashing water helps you the then dont forget to carry a bottle of water and a towel with you in exam :-D
