Re: GMAT Plan and IIM Admission [#permalink]
Hello meetnikhil

IIMs will judge you on several factors-
1. Academic- Your past scores are average, the only way you can compensate that it by a high GMAT or an otherwise strong written application. Difficult to say anything as both information are missing.
2. Work Ex- Just saying years and company will not help. What has been your career progress and your key achievements in your 12 years? They are more interested in your story. Your essays will help bring that out. I cannot emphasize enough that one week will be way too less to write a strong story.
3. Future Goals- Why MBA? Why IIM A/B/C? What is your compelling reason to pursue an MBA after 12 years? Are your expectations in line with the program? All this is also going to be a part of the written application.
4. Diversity- Indian. IT. Male. Above average work ex. Why should IIMs admit you? What makes you stand out? What new perspectives will you bring to the class? How will your peers (majorly from IT) benefit from your presence? No information here to give any feedback.
Depending on the answers to above it will be easier to tell what GMAT score you should target, although at least 720+ for your profile (based on the limited info)
At the cost of repeating myself- one week is no enough. Ideally it takes 4-8 weeks to prepare a good application for 1 B-School if you start from scratch. That means you should start soon if not today itself.
If you wish to have a detailed discussion, feel free to reach out.

Hi All,

I'm Nikhil. I'm planning to take GMAT in August mostly 25th or 26th August.
I'm targeting for IIM Ex MBA - A,B,C, L, I.
My profile in brief is as follows:
10th 76.93 12th 82.5
BE Mech Avg 58.5 Final year 65.13 - Degree in First class (My uni considers only last years marks for Degree class)
Work Ex - 12+ years - IT - Infosys TCS now IBM
One year onsite Ex in Australian Bank

Can anyone from IIM Ex MBA let me know whether my profile is good enough to get into IIM's - including top one A B C?
What minimum score I need to target for?
First round date for IIM A is 3rd Sep, is One week time good enough to complete my application for IIM A?

Kindly let me know.

Hi meetnikhil,

Thanks for sharing your query.

While we do not have much information pertaining to your career progress and achievements, a preliminary analysis reveals that you must definitely look upwards of 720. The top 3 IIMs will definitely be Stretch programs considering you belong to the Indian Male IT Pool and you will need to put in a significant effort into your essays as well as your GMAT prep in order to have a good chance there. The international exposure, though, is a plus and should be represented well.

Coming to your second query, a week is definitely not enough to put together a strong application. Essays require a whole lot of deliberation and we suggest you start working on the same at least 3-4 weeks prior to the deadline.

Hope this helped.

All the best!
