Hi,

Please look at the question in the attached image. According to me the answer should be 81 however gmac says the answer is 27.

You need to pay attention to what the answer is saying.. its not asking you to find 9x3x3 which is 81 .

You need to find, the reverse i.e.

|9|x|6| = 3x9 x 6/2 = 27 x3 = 81

Now 81 = 3 x 27 = |27| (27 is odd => 3m)

Therefore Answer is : D. |27|

Just one of the type of questions where the GMAT makes us pick the one you calculate first.

Hi,
it is a simple gmatprep trick:

|9|*|6|=81

|81|=243 - not equal

|27|=27*3=81 - equal

Simple. Remeber the answer choices are also in boxes

Hence [27] = 27*3 = 81
and [9] * [6] = 9*3 * 6/2 = 27*3 = 81

This is one where I still don't understand

Isn't the number in the box the final answer?
So for example 9 in the box makes m-3?
