Hi All,

Quick question about scheduling. I am planning on taking the GMAT on Nov 9th. I am also scheduling a 2nd one just in case the first one doesn't go well (trying to make the 2nd round deadline for most schools in Jan) on the 25th.

My question is can I schedule it EXACTLY 16 days after or do i need to go for the 26th of November?

Hi u4gotboutdray01,

To start, scheduling a 2nd Exam might be completely unnecessary, so you do not need to spend that additional money right now. If the application deadlines for the Schools that you're planning to apply to are not until January, then you would not necessarily need to 'rush' back in to retest. If you were unhappy with your 1st Score, then it's certainly possible that you would need more than 16 days of additional study time to get to the point that you could hit your Score Goal... meaning that you would then have to spend MORE money to reschedule that 2nd Test Date. Are you concerned that you would not be able to secure a second Test Appointment if you waited too long to schedule it?

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the response.

There are 2 factors and 1 is yes making sure I am able to schedule the second one in time (not terribly concerned since I am in a large city and there are many dates open). The 2nd is that I want to make sure I have a good enough score (lets say 650+) before I reach out to people for my recommendations. I know I can take it again in mid December but I want to give them enough time with all the holidays coming around the 2nd round application deadline for most schools.

How much of a heads up do you think is appropriate for recommendations?

Hi u4gotboutdray01,

Is there a particular reason why you are waiting until after you take your GMAT to speak to your recommenders?

Hi u4gotboutdray01,

From what you describe, you assume that you need a reasonably-strong GMAT Score before you ask anyone to write you a Letter of Recommendation. That shouldn't be a factor in who you ask for an LOR - but if someone's LOR is contingent on your GMAT Score, then that's an LOR that you probably do NOT want. For a Letter of Rec to be meaningful, it has to be 'genuine' and full of praise; if it feels 'vague' (for example, if it's from someone who simply does not know you very well), then it will likely be ineffective (as far as convincing an Admissions Committee of how amazing you are).

If you do not think that you will have any issue scheduling a 2nd attempt (if needed), then your original assumption has no bearing on that choice. IF you would only feel comfortable asking for an LOR after you earn a great GMAT Score, then you won't ask until you have that Score - meaning that the 'lead time' for asking for the Letter is irrelevant (re: your GMAT Score would have to come first before you even asked). Based on what you have planned, there's no reason to schedule a 2nd attempt now (it would essentially be an expense that you might be able to avoid).

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the reply again. My LOR aren't dependent on a score but I don't think I am going to apply to top schools unless I get a strong GMAT score since I need to help some weak spots in my application (undergrad GPA)
