GMAT Score Cancellation  [#permalink]

Hello,

I gave my GMAT test and unfortunately scored really less. In all my mocks I scored more than 600 and ended up getting only 490 in my main test. I have decided to retake the test with better preparation after a few months. I would like to know if I am required to cancel my current scores before retaking my test again. Is it mandatory I do it? Would it have any impact on my B-School admissions if I don't cancel them? I am concerned because my current score is really low.

Thank you in advance.

Hello, Welcome to Gmatclub. I am sorry to hear that you scored quite less as compared to the scores which you were getting in mocks. What is your target score? As an advise, 490 is too low score and you should cancel this score. 490 is not going to give you any benefit but a bad impression to ad-com about your skill level. Can you explain how did you studied till now? What are the used resources, strategy? Did you gave the GMAT official mock exams ? If yes, what was your score on those tests?

Hi Vignesh,

Yes. Please cancel the score if you can now. If you’re consistently getting 600+ in mocks, I’m sure you can try for a 700 score.

All the best

Since 490 is too low a score to get into any reputable program, I would vote to get it canceled.

Best luck next time!

What's the procedure to cancel this score right now?
Thanks__

You need to go on official GMAT website and on the frequently asked questions tab, you will get the procedure to cancel the score.

You can cancel the score from your registered account.

You should not feel that you have to rush to cancel. The other part of the picture is this: if you keep the 490 score and subsequently end up getting a good improvement, that will help you to craft a strong story. The large improvement could demonstrate your ability, persistence, etc.

It will not look good that you scored a 490 in your first attempt. Looking at your mock scores, it is advisable to cancel your scores immediately.

All the best!

Hi vigneshvrk,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. Business Schools generally do not care if you retake the GMAT, so having this initial Score in your file is likely not a big issue. That having been said, if you would rather that no-one else know about this Score, then you should go through the steps to officially cancel it.

When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
6) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

You might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

Hi vigneshvrk,

I’m not sure whether you did already, but I recommend that you cancel your latest GMAT score. By no means is it mandatory, but there is no reason to have that score show up on your official GMAT score report.

If you need any advice regarding your retake, feel free to reach out. Good luck!
