If set S={2,5,1,x,7}, what is x ?

(1) The range of set S is 8

(2) The median of set S is 2

The answer given is : C

cant x take different values such as : 1.1, 1.2 , 1.3... and hence answer should be E ?

For answer to be c , should it not be mentioned that its an integer set?

I hope i am not missing something.

If set S={2,5,1,x,7}, what is x ?

(1) The range of set S is 8. The range of a set is the difference between the largest and smallest elements of the set. Now, since the range is 8, then either x=9 (in this case the largest element is x=9 and the smallest element is 1 --> range=9-1=8) or x=-1 (in this case the largest element is 7 and the smallest element is x=-1 --> range=7-(-1)=8). Not sufficient.

(2) The median of set S is 2. The median of a set with odd number of elements is just the middle element, when arranged in ascending/descending order. So, this statement implies that $$x\leq{2}$$. Not sufficient.

(1)+(2) Since from (2) $$x\leq{2}$$, then from (1) $$x=-1$$. Sufficient.

I think there is no need to write that it is an integer, because x can take fractional values, but no fractional value could be found if both statements taken together. For example you cannot find a fractional number with which you can have the range of 8 in the set with the biggest number 7.
