I chose D originally then C. I thought C "as varied as those of" meant "as varied as <i>the resource base<i> of the following countries....

obviously its wrong but why?

Nothing worng with A.

D seems that we are comparing other countries with China etc.
The intended meaning of the sentence is that China etc are examples of countires.
