Hi,

First of all, hats off to the guys and gals who spend time in giving suggetions to others. thanks in advance for you time .

I gave a practice test today.

The scores were disappointing.

GP1:
VERBAL : 17
MATHS : 29
Total : 490

I know this is a very bad score. I need to improve a lot.....a lot. I need to go a very long way......I have two months of time. My test date is 4th april, 2007. I work and so can spend 2-3 hours daily and more on weekends. Can anyone of you give me some suggestions on how to improve myself.........

Details:
--------
1. One of the main reasons for such a low score was , ...the alloted time was not sufficient. I answered 10 questions in Quant and 15 questions in Verbal in the last 5 minutes of the sections. It clearly states I should improve on the times, but how?

2. I think I am too slow in reading and understanding things. How can I improve my reading speed and understanding as i read?

3. I am good in grammar. I am very very weak in RCs. How can I impove on this?

4. I did Nova press GMAT prep course and Kaplan Advanced prep. Can you name some more books for VERBAL and MATH.

If you can stick to your study schedule diligently, 2 months is more than enough to improve your score.

First try to get your basics right and then start working on your speed.

For verbal, Manahattan series' sentence correction guide is amazing. For CR and RC, you can try Princeton Review and Kaplan. Also, participate in the discussions on this forum. For RC, just practise as many passages as you can, initially without timing yourself, and later with time limit- average 2 mins per question.

For Maths, you can first go through the Manhattan series books to understand the kind of questions you will encounter in GMAT and to learn tricks for solving the questions faster. Then practise from Kaplan and Princeton Review. Also, participate in the Maths forum on GMATclub, it will surely improve your understanding of concepts.

Once, you feel that you have mastered the basics, try taking few CATs - Princeton and Kaplan books come with CAT CDs. You should do GMATprep tests at the end because GMATprep tests give the most accurate assessment.

Also, doing OG11 is a must but do it only after completing the GMAtprep tests since many of the questions in OG11 are repeated in GMATprep. If you do not have enough time, then just practise the last 50 questions in each section since the questions are arranged by difficulty level.

I got a 450 so you are not alone with a low score, Siva. Fight on!

You may also try to write some essays for AWA. I think it is a great self assessment on your grammar and critical skills. I am forcing myself to write essays and it does help a lot on my verbal skills.

hi mst and faifai0714

Thanks a lot for your time and replying me. I need to buy kaplan and Manhattan books. So should see if some one is selling in this group itself.

Thanks once again.

Depending on your target scores and time to prepare + endurance I would plan for some extra time. It took me some 3.5 months prep (@about 20 -30 hs/week) to score 710 and my original GP was around 620 - 650.

But hey, that's just me. Ask around for extra opinions.

Well, why don't you first set the target as 2 months. You have anyway already paid for the test. And if you feel by March 25th that you are still not ready, then you can always postpone the test.

But I would suggest, you try to aim for the April 4th date. If you think from now itself that you may have to postpone the date, then you will surely not be ready in 2 months. I started preparing for my GMAT in August. But I started studying seriously in October only, when I finally scheduled the test for Dec 8th.
