Two of the hints that helped me determine the answer were the verb tense of establish and developed, and the modifier strike in adverb form.
But can someone explain why it is wrong to remove "the basis"?

D and E use striking instead of strikingly so they are out
Between A, B and C, the choice is between establishes and established.
Even though is was written in the past, it still IS an early and original work that establishes. So B is out
Between A and C, I eliminated C for 2 reasons: One, it removed 'basis'. It establishes the basis not the notion. Secondly, since establishes a basis is in present tense, develops should also be in present tense. C changes develops to developed.

So the answer is A

Correct answer is A

per the meaning of the sentence, the origin of the work is striking, so "strikingly" must be use to modify the adjective " original. D and E are out.

improper past tense is used in choice B and C. Left A

Additionally, "by which" ambiguosly modifies "soul making" or "Keats's notion"

I thought that 'original work' was a noun, thus narrowed down to D and E which says 'striking original work'.

Also why cant past tense be used ?

Hi,
NOUN is work..
ORIGINAL is adjective modifying work and STRIKINGLY is an adverb modifying original..
we are using IS in non-underlined portion so should continue in present tense..

The Ode on Indolence is..... refers preset context so, the rest of the sentence should carry the same tense.

striking original work - Is incorrect , it must be strikingly original work....

'a method' here refers to " Keats's notion of soul making"..
the VERB prior to " Keats's notion of soul making" gives away the answer - establishes WHAT-- establishes a method or establishes the basis of a method..

Ans: A

Cut 1: Similar tenses

Option C & D use different tenses for Establish and Develop. These need to be the same. Hence, C & D are out.

Cut 2: Meaning & Tense:

Option E - 'which' after the comma refers to the work and not the method which is the basis for Keat's notion. Hence E is out

Down to A & B

B is simple past and A is simple present. The sentence opens with the "The ode on insolence IS....", hence simple present is appropriate. eliminate B.

Usually 'striking' is used with 'to' if former is followed by a Noun,
for eg.: "the murder bore a striking similarity to an earlier shooting".

But in D & E, 'to' is missing.

D and E replace ‘strikingly’ with ‘striking’ these mean different things so the meaning of the sentence changes. B and C use the wrong tense for ‘develop’. Thus, A is the only acceptable answer.
