A quick question:

I did my undergrad from a top 20 institute in India where GPA is on a scale of 10.0 and isn't relative. I topped my class with a GPA of 9.08. How will HBS compare this with people on a 4.0 scale? I know they ask us not to convert anything but was wondering how they do it.

Will it be 4.0 since I was the topper?
or
Will it be 3.6 (~4*9.08/10)?

I mentioned my rank in the app.

As they mention frequently on their website, the adcom is very familiar with different ranking systems and know that a 3.9 at an Ivy League is not the same as a 3.9 from an unranked school. In that respect, I am sure they will consider both your school rank and your class rank alongside your GPA. I feel you have nothing to worry about.

Congrats to everyone who received their invites.

How likely do you think it is that an invite might come in a week from now? Based on previous years are you able to say that, say 75% of the invites go out on the first date and 25% on the second date, anything like that...?

I'm still hopeful

Good spirit - am trying to keep my hopes alive as well. I wouldn't be surprised if that percentage actually changed this year to 25/75. I mean its HBS - you never know what they are thinking. Shouldn't focus on that anyways - whats done is done. Unless Dee Leopold comments, that will remain a mystery.

All the best guys - hang in there.

Im worried that its by region and industry - since they need to compare you to your peers, right? My theory is that as the apps come in they are sorted into buckets, and then each bucket is analyzed and sorted into the different admit/ding groups. I mean, thats how I would do it. Doing it by order doesnt make sense, what if you start giving interviews then see that much stronger candidates from that region/industry have submitted as well?

I read in Dee Leopold's webinar transcript -- kindly published by somebody here -- that they indeed sort by industry.

Quote:
Question: Do you have any recommendations about how the board looks at international applicants?

Leopold: We have a deep and strong admissions board that has seen applications from many countries and many schools. When you come in the door as an applicant, our way of sorting first is by the industry in which you work, not the country from which you come. We like to start with things you have chosen, not by chance. That’s our first organizing principle. No, it’s not as if we are deciding how many students we would like from a certain country. There are no targets or quotas.

I think it's pretty likely HBS is doing things differently this year with interview invites - just seems that the average GMATClub member is more qualified than the average applicant - and the fact that there are so few interview invites (in comparison to last year's first wave of invites on GMATClub) strikes me that maybe the two waves are more balanced than last year's 75/25 split

Yes, I've read approximately 20% of the applicants are interviewed. About 1,800 interviews per year, so the percentage depends on the pool of applicants, which has recently been in the 9,000-10,000 range.

For those of you who are curious, 11 of the 13 who were invited to interview had their GMAT score visible. The average GMAT of those invited to interview was 737. The range was 690-760. Obviously, this doesn't mean much considering the small sample. But I analyze everything so I thought I would share in case you do too!

There is a disproportionate number of international students on this board, so the interview numbers would be deflated being that their admissions rates are lower, I think.

I didn't get an invite today either. I've mentally accepted I'm not getting in. You cannot be disappointed if expectations don't exist, right?

*heavy sigh

Hopefully, everything will work out in the end!!!

I think we all have done our best on the apps and more often than not hard work pays off...

Didnt get an invite either although after attending the HBS info session, I felt I sounded like the person they really wanted - I am sure the 200 other individuals in the room felt the same way

Definitely true, the chances went down. But if we want to pursue careers of impact and leadership, then we`re going to have much tougher moments than waiting for schools to send us interview requests. In the future, our problems might involve investors pulling out money, board members trying to kick us out, sales declining rapidly in our most established markets, having to decide in what product to invest in when the focus groups and surveys provide no clear answer and the budget deadline is approaching.

If what we wrote about our future in our application essays is true, then we will face a lot more uncertainty and bigger decisions than this in the future. We better get used to it!

They did not post stats about R2 last year, from what I can tell by reading the Director's blog.

Also - from a previous post, I just want to say that Dee only posted R1 stats in R2 last year. She did not prep round 1 people for the amount of invitations that were going to go out - only after the fact.

I totally understand the reasons to continue with on with life and that statistics don't mean anything, but we all handle things differently. I wish I could wait patiently until next Wednesday, but since I can't, I analyze things. I'm an analyst, it's in my blood. And it keeps me busy while I wait. That doesn't mean I'm not jealous of those of you who can wait patiently

What happened to the comment about 480 interview spots for Boston, with only 3 available? Or am I imaging things?

Is it bad style to have my first post stating that I did not get an invitation either...?

While it's too early to go all doom and gloom, I will be quite mad at myself if I won't make it past even the first stage despite a decent GMAT. To boot, I think my HBS essays are the best of those I submitted, which does not bode well.

Oh well. Anyway, congratulations to all who got one!
