Harvard MBA vs Stanford MBA


This comparison is done as part of the project wSTAT. For more Business school comparisons, check wSTAT


  • 1. Harvard admitted 930 students out of 9886 applicants with an acceptance rate of 9.4%. Stanford admitted 419 out of 7797 applicants with an acceptance rate of 5.3%. Harvard's acceptance is considerably higher than Stanford’s acceptance rate.
  • 2. The application process looks very similar for both Harvard and Stanford. So, the average number of days to work on the application should be approximately the same.
  • 3. Regarding undergrad majors of entering class, Stanford’s class comprises 48% of Humanities and social sciences while that of Harvard is 17%
  • 4. Regarding undergrad majors of entering class, Harvard’s class comprises 46% of Economics and Business while that of Stanford is 18%
  • 5. 62% of Stanford’s class locates to Western united states post MBA while only 25% of Harvard’s class moves to Western united states.
  • 6. 44% of Harvard’s class locates to Northeast united states post-MBA while only 16% of Stanford’s class moves to Northeast United States.
  • 7. So if location post-MBA is your priority, you have a clear choice to make
  • 8. U.S. News ranking in Accounting for Harvard is 21 while that of Stanford is 6
  • 9. U.S. News ranking in Supply chain/logistics for Harvard is 21 while that of Stanford is 8

Great summary. I also remember seeing a Businessweek statistic that students who received an admit in both Harvard and Stanford MBA overwhelmingly chose Stanford. Harvard's core is Wall Street and Stanford's core is Silicon Valley, and more students choosing the latter may be a reflection of changing aspirations from Gordon Gekko to Steve Jobs.
