I heard that if you are on track for 800 you get Fermat's last theorem.

Interesting !!

Just a thought - May be those scoring 800 get a little over-confident about getting the admit and hence neglect other aspects of application (like essays ).

Long time lurker here...

I think the more likely issue in most cases is that the GMAT is only important to a point--it's critical to reach your school's minimum acceptable threshold for GMAT scores (whatever that might be), but there's not a ton of value in exceeding that threshold. Based on my experience, once you're in the range of GMAT scores for applicants they'd realistically consider, other factors become much more important for determining whether you'll actually get in.

In my case, I scored 780, and I got the el rejecto from one top 10 school, while I got wait listed by another top 10. My u-grad GPA was good, too, I certainly wasn't overconfident in my applications, and I'm not a one-dimensional robot type. What seems to have sunk me, though, is that I'm a little older and my work experience isn't super impressive. In the end, I think that those two things were a hell of a lot more important than my numbers.

In any case, I did get into a couple of 30- to 40-range schools with full scholarships. The high GMAT score probably played a pretty significant role in the scholarship decision, but I'm guessing I would have still been accepted (prob w/less money) at those two schools if my GMAT score had been 80 points lower.

Yes!!!! I did!!!!!

For Quants the last questions was a DS one for programming a space rocket to fly using only the math tools of linear algebra and the weighted average theorem.( I think that the NASA people do not know this cut through solution for their job. . . )

And for verbal section the last question was the below CR question:

Yes or no??

a) Yes.
b) No.
C) Maybe.
D) Yes, if in the case that I had knew the whole discussion I would have answered Yes.
E No, if in the case that I had knew the whole discussion I would have answered No.

After answering the last question the computer started smoking . .and a Matrix like code started showing on my screen and finally the score appeared after 1 minute. Then the supervisor of the test centre started setting up the printer in order to be able to print the digit 8 in the first place of the score. .( it was not necessary up until then . . . )

By arriving home I got an e-mail from the PhD of HBS assuring me that I have a place in their 2013 class.
I rejected the offer because I wanted a MBA degree instead . .

I have a friend who got a 790 with a 6AWA and got rejected by the 4 schools he applied to, depite that score and a 3.9 gpa. It was most likely because he had no work experience (applied right out of school) and was pretty much very one dimensional, complete academic. I read his essays they were very well written but there was no substance to them since he really had no experiences outside of the classroom and clubs.

He ended up getting a Phd in math instead.

i've wondered that too. especially because it seems no school in general has a GMAT range that includes an 800. do those 800 scorers just bomb the application? i would think if you are smart enough to get an 800, you would know it is only one of many criteria.

Bear in mind that the range that most schools publish is the middle 80%, not the full range for admitted students. I'm sure a few 800s have gotten into Stanford too, but I agree -- once you pass a certain threshold, the GMAT is meaningless.

after my GMAT, i did call up my friends to say that I got a 800, and that I was the third person ever to get it.

Makes for a good story. Everyone should try it :d

Guys,

Probability to receive 800 equals to $$(1/5)^78$$, or it is 3.022*10^-55.

i dont know about on this board. but stanford rejected like 8 people who scored 800 last year. and the essay is its own score. you can bomb the essay and get an 800.

I'm guessing the guys who scored 800s had a very similar story. Not enough work experience, not enough extracirriculars, and mediocre essays.
