Quick scanning tells me that there are 2 major splits in this question: heating oil vs. expectations.

    1. Since GMAT hates passive construction, I eliminate C, D, and E. Another reason to eliminate C, D, and E for this question is that it distorts the meaning that expectations is at the center of the sentence and not heating-oil prices.
    2. I then eliminate B on the grounds that it violated the comparison medium of comparative + than. Comparative + over is the wrong construction.
    3. Other errors are highlighted in different colours

Quote:
Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil thanthey were last year.

A) Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil than they were
B) Heating-oil prices are expected to rise higher this year over last because refiners pay about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did
C) Expectations are for heating-oil prices to be higher this year than last year's because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did
D) It is the expectation that heating-oil prices will be higher this year over last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel morefor crude oil now than what they were
E) It is the expected that heating-oil prices will rise higher this year than last year's because refiners pay about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did

A is correct. "expected to be" is correct idiom. and "paying" is correct.

hence A.

C: is comparing expectations of this year vs the last year's. change of meaning. OUT

A it is.

how can one assumes LAST to be LAST YEARS'S PRICES.it can be last year.if i am taking "last" as LAST YEAR ,then i am comparing this years's price with last year ,making it illogical

Hi guys,

Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil than they were last year.

A) Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil than they were
B) Heating-oil prices are expected to rise higher this year over last because refiners pay about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did
C) Expectations are for heating-oil prices to be higher this year than last year's becuase refiners are paying about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did
D) It is the expectation that heating-oil prices will be higher this year over last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil now than what they were
E) It is the expected that heating-oil prices will rise higher this year than last year's because refiners pay about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did
KEY: A

Prices at the producer level are only 1.3 percent higher now than a year ago and are going down, even though floods in the Midwest and drought in the south are hurting crops and therefore raised corn and soybean prices.

A: than a year ago and are going down, even though floods in the Midwest and drought in the south are hurting crops and therefore raised
B: than those of a year ago, and are going down, even though floods in the Midwest and drought in the south are hurting crops and therefore raising
C: than a year ago and are going down, despite floods in the Midwest and drought in the south, and are hurting crops and therefore raising
D: as those of a year ago and are going down, even though floods in the Midwest and drought in the south hurt crops and therefore raise
E: as they were a year ago and are going down, despite floods in the Midwest and drought in the south, and are hurting crops and therefore raising
KEY:B

I was wondering what is difference between these two questions. Why one use those of, one doesn't?

Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last because refiners are paying about $5 a
barrel more for crude oil than they were last year.

A. Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last because refiners are paying about $5 a
barrel more for crude oil than they were
Correct

B. Heating-oil prices are expected to rise higher this year over last because refiners pay about $5 a
barrel for crude oil more than they did
“than they did” is not correct … it should be “than they were”
“rise higher” – higher is modifying “rise” ..So Heating-oil prices rose last year and it will rise again this year but the “rise” will be higher this year than last year ..
This certainly is NOT the intended meaning ..
Also, “higher” goes with “than” .. “higher …over” is unidiomatic…

C. Expectations are for heating-oil prices to be higher this year than last year’s because refiners are
paying about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did
here the subject is “expectation” so the phrase “last year’s” illogically say “Oil prices to be higher this year than the expectation of last year”

D. It is the expectation that heating-oil prices will be higher for this year over last because refiners are
paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil now than what they were
“what they were” is informal…

E. It is expected that heating-oil prices will rise higher this year than last year’s because refiners pay
about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did
Same “rise higher” error as in option B

Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil than they were last year.

(A) Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil than they were
- correct as is

(B) Heating-oil prices are expected to rise higher this year over last because refiners pay about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did
- "higher...over last year" = incorrect. proper idiom: "higher...than last year". also, "refiners ARE PAYING" to be // with "are expected to rise"

(C) Expectations are for heating-oil prices to be higher this year than last year's because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did
- "expectations are for" = wordy, awkward, passive. also, comparison issue: "HO prices to be higher this year than LAST YEAR (NOT "LAST YEAR'S")

(D) It is the expectation that heating-oil prices will be higher this year over last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil now than what they were
- same as "C": "it is the expectation" = wordy, awkward, passive. same error as "B": "higher...over" = incorrect.

(E) It is the expected that heating-oil prices will rise higher this year than last year's because refiners pay about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did
- same as "C". "it is the expected" = all sorts of wrong. also same error as "C" -- comparison error.

Kudos please if you find helpful :)
