B. food chain as they transform the energy of the sun Incorrect 'stored in the plants' is modifying energy not sun

C. chain of food as they transformed the sun's energy Incorrect due to change in tense (from present to past)

D. food chain as they transform the sun's energy Correct

E. food chain as they transformed the energy of the sun Incorrect 'stored in the plants' is modifying energy not sun

Option B can be interpreted as energy of the sun that is stored inside a plant

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. It uses the Past Simple (transformed), which is used to describe actions that occurred at a certain point in the past or historical facts, to describe a fact or a general truth.


B. food chain as they transform the energy of the sun

While it corrects the original mistake and is grammatically correct, this answer choice is stylistically flawed. Replacing two-word phrase sun's energy with the four-word phrase energy of the sun creates redundancy.


C. chain of food as they transformed the sun's energy

This answer choice repeats the original mistake. It uses the Past Simple (transformed), which is used to describe actions that occurred at a certain point in the past or historical facts, to describe a fact or a general truth.

In addition, this answer choice is less concise than the original as a result of replacing the two-word phrase food chain with the three -word phrase chain of food.
