With student and faculty strength being the same a decade ago , student strength in Delta College, which provides technical education, has increased by 100% in the last decade while the student strength in Omega college, which provides non-technical education, has increased by 50%. Faculty strength in both colleges has increased by 20%, during same period.

Which of the following conclusions can be properly drawn based on the above information?

A. Delta College has earned more revenue than Omega College in the last decade.- incorrect. we cannot conclude this as we do not have any information about student fees.

B. Delta College has admitted more students than Omega College in the last decade.- incorrect as we cannot conclude about numbers from percentages without having information about initial number of students in each college.

C. Students have more interest in technical education than in non-technical education.- incorrect. out of scope. nothing can be inferred about interest of students.

D. Student to faculty ratio in Delta College is higher than the ratio in Omega College.- incorrect as we do not know the initial ratio of students to teachers in omega college.

E. Decrease in faculty to student ratio is more in Delta College than Omega College in the last decade.- correct choice. This choice can be concluded from the given information.

Delta college teacher+ student strength = omega college teacher + student strength
increase in delta students %> increase in omega college students % .

A. Delta College has earned more revenue than Omega College in the last decade. : no data for revenue is given, so cannot infer. Incorrect

B. Delta College has admitted more students than Omega College in the last decade. : Can be an option as % of admitted student is more, but we don't know initial figure , so cannot infer correctly

C. Students have more interest in technical education than in non-technical education. : Out of scope. As there may be other factors influencing like college repo, fees, teachers and facilities.

D. Student to faculty ratio in Delta College is higher than the ratio in Omega College. : This is completely opposite of what we are looking for. Incorrect : Ratio of delta will decrease vis a vis omega .

E. Decrease in faculty to student ratio is more in Delta College than Omega College in the last decade. : Inline with what we are looking for , T: S will decrease as % increase of S is more in delta. Thus decrease in ratio more in delta .

A. Delta College has earned more revenue than Omega College in the last decade. - such info is not provided / inferred by the passage

B. Delta College has admitted more students than Omega College in the last decade. - such info is not provided / cannot be inferred from the passage as we have no info about the absolute numbers of students and faculty at both colleges a decade ago

C. Students have more interest in technical education than in non-technical education.- infor not provided / cannot be inferred from the text

D. Student to faculty ratio in Delta College is higher than the ratio in Omega College. - honestly it looked like the correct answer to me but E was more convincing

E. Decrease in faculty to student ratio is more in Delta College than Omega College in the last decade - correct answer, the ratio was one at both college a decade ago and now are 5/3 at Delta and 5/4 at Omega with respective decrease of 66% and 25%.

-- Ratio of student to faculty was same in both college.
-- In Delta College, students are doubled (100% increase), and faculty increased by 20% i.e. 1.2 times.
-- In Omega College, students are 1.5 times now (50% increase), and faculty increased by 20% i.e. 1.2 times.

Which of the following conclusions can be properly drawn based on the above information?

we will go by option choice,

A. Delta College has earned more revenue than Omega College in the last decade.
-- We cannot conclude this, as neither we know the fee of both the colleges and nor we know exact number of students.

B. Delta College has admitted more students than Omega College in the last decade.
-- again we know % vale, not exact numbers.

C. Students have more interest in technical education than in non-technical education.
-- Out of scope.

D. Student to faculty ratio in Delta College is higher than the ratio in Omega College.
-- This is not correct, in fact it is lower now, as students in Delta college are doubled.

E. Decrease in faculty to student ratio is more in Delta College than Omega College in the last decade.
-- Correct, this is opposite of D.

IMO answer is E.

At first, I was stumped by this question. What the heck is “student and faculty strength” ?
A more important question is: do we have to know what they are to solve the problem?
No.

Note that “with student and faculty strength being the same” compares student and faculty strength within each college separately. It is not comparing the colleges. To be more detailed, student strength of Delta college was the same as faculty strength of Delta college. But student strength of Delta college was NOT the same as faculty strength of Omega college.

So, whenever we see a choice compare two colleges themselves, we cross it out. Let’s starts from the correct choice because doing so much helps see why the others are wrong:

E. Decrease in faculty to student ratio is more in Delta College than Omega College in the last decade.

A decade ago: faculty to student ratio in Delta was 1. A decade later 1.2/2 or 0.6
A decade ago: faculty to student ratio in Omega was 1. A decade later 1.2/1.5 or 0.8

Decrease in faculty to student ratio in Delta is 1 – 0.6 = 0.4
Decrease in faculty to student ratio in Omega is 1 – 0.8 = 0.2

0.4 > 0.2 , so E is correct.

A. Delta College has earned more revenue than Omega College in the last decade.

The reverse could very well be true. There is no reason to think otherwise. Nothing in the argument hints at the revenue.

B. Delta College has admitted more students than Omega College in the last decade.

A common trap. The argument is all about percentages, whereas this choice talks about numbers. The reverse of B may very well be true.

C. Students have more interest in technical education than in non-technical education.

A common trap. The argument is all about percentages, whereas this choice talks about numbers. The reverse of B may very well be true.

D. Student to faculty ratio in Delta College is higher than the ratio in Omega College.

The tem talks about the last decade, gives certain statistics that hold true in the last decade. However, this choice talks about the present. We don’t how thing are up these days. This choice is a trap. E is correct because it says in the last decade.

Hence E

Which of the following conclusions can be properly drawn based on the above information?

A. Delta College has earned more revenue than Omega College in the last decade. Incorrect, No information about revenue generated provided, Hence we cannot conclude on same

B. Delta College has admitted more students than Omega College in the last decade.. Incorrect. We cannot conclude on same as we dont know intial no. of students in each college, % increase can be stated.

C. Students have more interest in technical education than in non-technical education. Incorrect. Here there is big assumption that Delta & OMega are only education institution

Lets student in Delta be x , Student in Omega be y , (decade ago)

Faculy in Delta be w, Faculty in Delta be z. (decade ago)

D. Student to faculty ratio in Delta College is higher than the ratio in Omega College. Incorrect.

Studet to faculty ratio after increase in Delta =5/3=1.66

While intial student and faculty is not known for Omega , Unknown variables.

Hence we cannot conclude

E. Decrease in faculty to student ratio is more in Delta College than Omega College in the last decade.Correct

Decrease in faculty to student ratio for Delta College = 40%

Decrease in faculty to Student ration for Omega College =20%

We can Conclude hence E is Correct Option

GMATWhiz Explanation

Step 1 – Analysing the stimulus and question stem

With student and faculty strength being the same a decade ago, student strength in Delta College, which provides technical education, has increased by 100% in the last decade while the student strength in Omega college, which provides non-technical education, has increased by 50%. Faculty strength in both colleges has increased by 20%, during same period.
    • Facts-
      o Delta college –
         provides technical education
 student strength increased by 100% (doubled) in the last ten years
 faculty strength increased by 20%
      o Omega College
         provides non-technical education
 student strength increased by 50% (doubled) in the last ten years
 faculty strength increased by 20%

Step 2 – Pre-thinking

    1. The argument deals with percentage increment in students and faculty in two universities.

    2. Delta has a higher percentage increment in students than Omega. But both universities have same percentage increment in faculty.
      a. Say Delta- 10 years back had 1000 students and 100 faculty. It now has 2000 students and 120 faculty members.
        i. Student to faculty ratio 10 years back = 1000/100= 10:1
ii. Student to faculty ratio now= 2000/120= 16:1 (approx.)
      b. Say Omega- 10 years back had 1000 students and 100 faculty. It now has 1500 students and 120 faculty members
        i. Student to faculty ratio 10 years back = 1000/100= 10:1
ii. Student to faculty ratio now= 1500/120= 13:1 (approx.)
      c. (Even if the student and faculty strength ten years back are taken as different, the results will still be the same)
      d. Inference: Student to faculty ratio in Delta has increased more than Student to faculty ratio in Omega.

Step 3 – Answer Choice Elimination

Option A Analysis
Since the fees charged by each college is not given, this choice cannot be concluded. This choice is out of scope.
Incorrect Choice.

Option B Analysis
The argument shows data in percentage, but that doesn’t mean number will also have similar effect. Only if the numbers ten years back were significantly higher for Delta, then this choice might be true, otherwise not
Incorrect Choice.

Option C Analysis
Since we cannot say for sure which college had higher number of students joining the college, student interest cannot be determined. This choice is out of scope.
Incorrect Choice.

Option D Analysis
This choice is very cleverly worded and is a typical distrotion trap. We can say that the increment in ratio of student to faculty is higher for Delta than for Omega. But ratio of student to faculty in Delta may be lower than that in Omega.
Incorrect Choice.

Option E Analysis
This is in line with our pre-thinking.
The decrease in faculty to student ratio is for sure lower in Delta due to higher percentage increment in students as compared to percentage increment in faculty. While this trend is lower in Omega due to lower percentage increment in students in response to percentage increment in faculty.
Correct Choice.

Could you please help me understand how does the explanation is in line with what option E says?

Option E

Decrease in faculty to student ratio is more in Delta College than Omega College in the last decade.

Explanation for option E

The decrease in faculty to student ratio is for sure lower in Delta due to higher percentage increment in students as compared to percentage increment in faculty. While this trend is lower in Omega due to lower percentage increment in students in response to percentage increment in faculty.

I do not understand what they mean by "With student and faculty strength being the same a decade ago " in the first sentence of the argument. It is an ambiguous statement. Did the two colleges have the same strength of students and faculty? Was student strength equal to faculty strength? Was total student and faculty strength same as today a decade ago?
The entire question hinges on what this statement means.

I would ignore this question.

I do not understand what they mean by "With student and faculty strength being the same a decade ago " in the first sentence of the argument. It is an ambiguous statement. Did the two colleges have the same strength of students and faculty? Was total student and faculty strength same as today a decade ago?
The entire question hinges on what this statement means.

I would ignore this question.

Thank you VeritasKarishma for echoing our concern here. I have been repeatedly highlighting major error in the phrasing of this question. Because of the confusion you highlighted, I actually considered both scenarios (screenshot attached). However, even if we account for both scenarios, statements option D and E both can be inferred!

bb -FYI :)

I just read the statement and this time, my mind inferred it in a third way (which I have added). Others may infer it in other ways.

Can you please explain how d is wrong?
For delta ratio x- student y- faculty ago, now stud -2x, faculty=1.2y, ratio=5x/3y.
for omega ratio x- student, y- faculty ago, now student- 1.5x, faculty- 1.2y, ratio=5x/4y.
as both x& y will be +ve number, delat ratio > omega ratio.
