One renowned economist and social reformer has made a comparison of the labor movement and a flock of sheep as negotiating with a wolf, asking the wolf to scale back its demands for prey; the wolf may compromise, but the sheep will always suffer badly in the end.

(A) made a comparison of the labor movement and a flock of sheep as negotiating with a wolf, asking

“compared” is preferred. “as negotiating” is unidiomatic. “made a comparion” implies that he contrasted while we need to say that he found them similar, not different.

(B) made a comparison between the labor movement and a flock of sheep negotiating with a wolf, asking

“compared” is preferred. “made a comparion” implies that he contrasted while we need to say that he found them similar, not different.

(C) compared the labor movement with a flock of sheep as negotiating with a wolf and which asked

“as negotiating” is unidiomatic. “which asked” is not parallel to anything.

(D) compared the labor movement to a flock of sheep negotiating with a wolf, asking

Correct: “asking” correctly modifies the preceding action.

(E) compared the labor movement with a flock of sheep that negotiates with a wolf and it asks

“ans it asks” introduces two unrelated actions. actually “asking” is the part of “negotiating”.

Hence D

Quote:

(B) made a comparison between the labor movement and a flock of sheep negotiating with a wolf, asking

compared is preferrable to "made a comparison". So, we will keep these on hold and come back to them only if each of CDE don't work out

Quote:
(C) compared the labor movement with a flock of sheep as negotiating with a wolf and which asked

Compared with is used for showing differences between objects. When showing similarities, we use "compared to". So, this is wrong. Also use of "asked" is wrong.

Quote:
(D) compared the labor movement to a flock of sheep negotiating with a wolf, asking

this looks okay

Quote:
(E) compared the labor movement with a flock of sheep that negotiates with a wolf and it asks

same issue as in C. Also, "it asks" is wrong. it should be "asking" as a modifier as used in D

Answer: D
