Concluding statement: as global temperatures rise, prokaryotes could increase climate warming at a faster rate than current models suggest.
The prokaryotes are said to use energy and releases carbon dioxide, by performing respiration that contributes to climate warming.
The most effective evaluation to evaluate the argument is :
A. The relationship between temperature and the prokaryote’s carbon output is inversely proportional (if the relation is inversely proportional how the statement will evaluate the argument in the passage? There has to be a positive relation between two to testify the passage) (Incorrect)
B. The amount of carbon dioxide released by a prokaryote in a given period of time depends on its weight. (No such parameter is given to determine the amount of carbon released proportional to weight of prokaryotes) (Incorrect)
C. The carbon output of the prokaryote during a given time period depends on its respiration rate, which is positively correlated to changes in temperature.(Yes, the respiration rate of prokaryote is been considered as a major factor in determining the carbon output in the climate) (Correct)
D. Some prokaryotes will increase their carbon output in response to higher temperatures.(No factor to determine That the carbon is released due to high temperature of climate While it's the other way round) (Incorrect)
E. The relationship between temperature and the prokaryote’s respiration rate is inversely proportional(No, the carbon release of prokaryote and temperature rising are directly proportional, as given in passage) (Incorrect)
IMO C
Posted from my mobile deviceHi,
yashikaaggarwal, can you help me on this argument please?
I thought that the answer would be A.
Because A weakens the conclusion, thus it evaluates the conclusion “false”.
Every one, even experts say that A is wrong because it weakens the conclusion.
However, in evaluate question, when an option makes the conclusion false(weaken) or right(strengthen), then it is a eligible option to evaluate isn’t it?
Another problem I have is this,
«Most prokaryotes perform respiration that uses energy and releases carbon dioxide, contributing to climate warming.»Here, does the closing participle phrase “contributing~” modify “perform respiration”? Grammatically it should modify subject or verb, not the noun “carbon dioxide”.
Is CR passage written correctly in grammar all the time not like RC?. If so, I should have understood this sentence as the action of respiration has relationship with climate warming, not the carbon dioxide has relationship with climate warming. Am I right?
Sum up, if I properly figured out what I misunderstood like I pointed out above, (A) is wrong because it
denies the fact that the warming has relationship with respiration, and respiration equals emission of carbon dioxide, not because it weakens the conclusion?
Thank you in advance!
The Global/climate warming in passage is directly linked to the carbon not the respiration, for ex- if we were taking about plants who consumes carbon letting out oxygen there won't be any climate warming. Here we are considering the Respiration system of Prokaryotes who releases carbon which result into the rising level of climate.
The question ask which statement among option is evaluating the passage, hence we are required to justify the passage.
Therefore weakening statement such as A can't be used to justify the passage.
If we say there is an inverse relation between Climate warming and Carbon release of prokaryotes, then the prokaryotes are not the reason why climate warming is happening might be other causes are resulting into climate warming. BUT, the passage focal point is how Prokaryotes' respiration process result into climate warming so inverse relation between Climate warming and Carbon release of prokaryotes is not useful.
In the
highlight part,
"Contributing" is not modifying
"performing respiration" but the carbon emission which is result of Prokaryotes' Respiration process, as said above respiration process don't result in climate warming but
Prokaryotes' respiration process resulting in carbon emission does. So, According to the passage neither "process of respiration" nor "Carbon dioxide" has a relation with "climate warming" But "Prokaryotes' respiration process which emits carbon in air".
Lastly,
Unlike, CR Questions are meant to be understood, like what does what, what's the relation, how its happening and why? If we start putting SC rules here, we as well might get lost in whole passage and end up choosing wrong. As Stated by many experts, GMAT Verbal section is more of reasoning skills than just putting verbal knowledge. So try to understand the meaning, for instance in
highlighted text «Most prokaryotes perform respiration that uses energy and releases carbon dioxide, contributing to climate warming.»What could contribute to climate warming? Prokaryotes themselves(An organism can't result in Climate warming, Their Action Might)? Respiration(which is done by plants as well and they release oxygen which do not lead to climate warming)? or Carbon Dioxide(which is surely the action cause by prokaryotes in the passage.) so Carbon emission contributes in climate warming not other two.
Hopefully this helps.
However, I don’t understand your saying “ The question ask which statement among option is evaluating the passage, hence we are required to justify the passage. Therefore weakening statement such as A can't be used to justify the passage.” Because it contradicts with what I’ve learned..
For example, the question in the attachment below, the answer is D, and it is so because it weakens the conclusion.
Also, how can we justify the passage since there is no adversative events in the passage...? There is nothing to justify isn’t it...?
You sure do well explain me about what I miss understood on the relationship between climate warming and prokaryotes’s respiration process which emits carbon dioxide! I only am so confused regarding identity the question type and its method of approaching.
