A. Mysore Vasudevachar, who was a violinist and composer, produced a body of work both rooted

The word “both” and the word “and” must be followed by two parallel elements. here rooted and Muthuswami Dikshitar are not parallel

B. Mysore Vasudevachar, the violinist and composer, produced a body of work that was rooted both

Parallelism - "both in the classical tradition and Muthuswami Dikshitar are not Parallel

C. Violinist and composer Mysore Vasudevachar, who produced a body of work rooted

Not a complete sentence missing verb

D. Violinist and composer Mysore Vasudevachar produced a body of work that was rooted

Looks Good

E. Violinist and composer Mysore Vasudevachar produced a body of work rooted both

Parallelism - "both in the classical tradition and Muthuswami Dikshitar are not Parallel

Any answer with "both" needs a parallel structure, and there isnt one.
Choice C is not a sentence
Choice D fixes both of these errors.

For sentence meaning: "both... and..." cannot attach independent clauses.
Else "both... and..." should have encompassed the artists Tyagraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar, but since that is not part of the underline we cannot use that structure.

A. Incorrect usage of both... and
B. Incorrect usage of both... and
C. Sentence fragment
D. Correct
E. Incorrect usage of both... and

A. "Both" and "and" should be parallel.
''rooted'' is not parallel to "Muthuswami Dikshitkar".
So, choice A can be eliminated.

B. Similar to A.
"Both" and "and" should be parallel.
''...in the classical...'' is not parallel to "Muthuswami Dikshitkar".
So, choice E can be eliminated.

C. C does not have a main verb.

D. Unlike C, D has a main verb. D is OK.

E. Similar to A.
"Both" and "and" should be parallel.
''...in the classical...'' is not parallel to "Muthuswami Dikshitkar".
So, choice B can be eliminated.

A. Mysore Vasudevachar, who was a violinist and composer, produced a body of work both rooted in the classical tradition of Tyagraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar, yet in many ways he stood apart from the mainstream carnatic repertory.

The idiom “both A and B” demands that A and B be parallel, for example: both noun and noun.
“both rooted in the classical tradition of Tyagraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar” – here we have “both modifier and noun”, so A and B are non-parallel.

B. Mysore Vasudevachar, the violinist and composer, produced a body of work that was rooted both in the classical tradition of Tyagraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar, yet in many ways he stood apart from the mainstream carnatic repertory.

C. Violinist and composer Mysore Vasudevachar, who produced a body of work rooted in the classical tradition of Tyagraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar, yet in many ways he stood apart from the mainstream carnatic repertory.

This choice lacks the main clause. It’s a fragment. A subordinate conjunction “comma + yet” starts a subordinate clause, so everything after “yet” is a subordinate clause. Meanwhile, everything before “yet” is a big modifier, not a clause. Hence, this choice lacks its main clause.

D. Violinist and composer Mysore Vasudevachar produced a body of work that was rooted in the classical tradition of Tyagraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar, yet in many ways he stood apart from the mainstream carnatic repertory.

The correct answer. Rectifies all the fools of the preceding choices and gets rid of “both A and B” altogether, avoiding idiom based issues.

E. Violinist and composer Mysore Vasudevachar produced a body of work rooted both in the classical tradition of Tyagraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar, yet in many ways he stood apart from the mainstream carnatic repertory.

“both in the classical tradition of Tyagraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar” - here we have “both modifier and noun”, so A and B are non-parallel.

Hence D

Concept Checked: Parallelism & IDIOM

Mysore Vasudevachar, who was a violinist and composer, produced a body of work both rooted in the classical tradition of Tyagraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar, yet in many ways he stood apart from the mainstream carnatic repertory.

Both X & Y- Elements X & Y should be parallel.
A sentence must have atleast one independent clause

A. Mysore Vasudevachar, who was a violinist and composer, produced a body of work both rooted - Incorrect - Parallelism error - "both rooted… and Muthuswami Dikshitar…- Here “rooted” is an adjective in this situation, and "Muthuswami Dikshitar" is Noun.

B. Mysore Vasudevachar, the violinist and composer, produced a body of work that was rooted both - Incorrect -Parallelism error - "both in the classical… and Muthuswami Dikshitar…- Here “in the classical” is a prepositional phrase, and "Muthuswami Dikshitar" is Noun.

C. Violinist and composer Mysore Vasudevachar, who produced a body of work rooted - Incorrect - Clause : This sentence has no "main verb" so this is not an independent clause. portion after , "Who... " is a modifier.

D. Violinist and composer Mysore Vasudevachar produced a body of work that was rooted Correct - This option has a main verb, and parallelism issue is no longer there. "that" acts as a restrictive modifier modifying Work.

E. Violinist and composer Mysore Vasudevachar produced a body of work rooted both - Incorrect -Parallelism error - "both in the classical… and Muthuswami Dikshitar…- Here “in the classical” is a prepositional phrase, and "Muthuswami Dikshitar" is Noun.

Thanks for the question Sthk94!

In those options, "Violinist and composer" are both titles we can apply to Mysore Vasudevachar, so they are grammatically correct in that respect. It would be the same if you were to describe a person who holds two jobs. :)

We hope that helps clear that up! Make sure to tag us at EMPOWERgmatVerbal if you have any other questions!
