That's a good question. You definitely don't need to start an organization to make a real impact. The distinction that I was making was between really making a difference, or simply attending weekly/monthly events.
For anything like this -- either on the job or in community service -- ask yourself, "Would this have happened if I hadn't been here?" What was accomplished, what changed, whose life was made better, etc., because of YOU? How would that outcome have been different if just any old person had done it instead of you?
Volunteering on a weekly basis absolutely shows an impact... But still keep in mind, "How did I put my own personal mark on the situation?"
