This is a case of number of arrangements possible with repetition.

Thus you have 4 options each for the 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th letter giving you a total of 4*4*4*4 = 256 number of possible combinations.

They are asking for different combinations, hence A, B, C and D can be used again.

Thus, First letter can be chosen in 4 ways, second in 4 ways, third in 4 ways and fourth letter in 4 ways.

=> 4* 4 * 4 * 4 => 256 ways

In case you were not sure about using "4*4*4*4=256", you could eliminate A, B, C and D by calculating the numbers without repetition "4!=24". You know that there will be more than 24 (because you can repeat numbers), so the only possible answer will be "E".

I have a doubt here when in question it is mentioning "different 4 letter combinations" then why we are repeating the letter in answering the question ? Thanks in Advance

"different" here simply means to capture all the possible combinations. AAAA and BBBB are still considered valid under this assumption and are thus counted as 2 separate arrangments.

There are four places and each place can take any of the four letters.
Therefore, 4x4x4x4 = 256 combinations
