Hi Neetu:
Welcome to the GMAT Club

Is there a reason why you set your target at 790? Do you have any specific school in mind?

760 puts you in the 99 percentile and you can get that with a Q51 and V42 distribution.

Also remember, your GMAT score is only ONE of the components of your application. The driving force behind a powerful application is the Goal. A killer GMAT score cannot cover up weaknesses in other components of the application.
I suggest you get your resume evaluated by one of the consultants here.

I share this from my personal experience - I chased GMAT like a madman and later I realized that my 750 is not the be all and end all. I sat on my score for 4 years developing my profile. Now, I'm ready to play this game for real and start applying ;)

Hi Neetu,

To improve in verbal you have to be quite equipped to understand the vocabulary in the GMAT CR and RC passages. However the RC passages require that you are able to understand the words used in the context of the passage.Hence it would be best if you start reading articles, science journals , business tabloids and read them online and figure out for yourself if you can understand the language and the main idea present in the passage. This would be a better way to tackle vocabulary on the GMAT.

For CR, you need to understand & gauge what question types you are getting wrong most frequently. Then, you can work on & practice the question types you are facing problems with. Work on grammar rules and consolidate the CR patterns of arguments so that you do well on these 2 components.

We would advice do studying and test taking simultaneously. Keep doing a lot of tests and review your performance on a daily basis.

Hope this helps.Write back to us in case you have any further queries.

Hello Amrith,

Thanks for your reply.
I just want to give my best shot at GMAT few days back I took a GMAT Prep test and scored 650. Q48, V33.
As I don't have very impressive resume, I want to maximize my GMAT score as much as possible.

Can you please answer my other question on how to plan the practice tests.

Neetu

Hi neetu,

With your planned Test Date, you have approximately 7 weeks to continue studying. While that might seem like a long time, it's not as much time as you think it is. Your score goal (790) is not a realistic goal. I'm not saying that you can't achieve it, but I am saying that it requires a level of ability that most Test Takers will never accomplish in their lives. It's understandable that you want to score as high as you can, but there's still the reality of how much time you have before your Test Date, your personal strengths/weaknesses and your ability to learn and use tactics.

All of that having been said, your last practice CAT score makes me think that you could probably score in the 700s if you make the necessary adjustments to how you "see" (and respond to) the GMAT. I'm hoping that you can answer a few questions:

1) What practice materials are you currently using?
2) When you took this CAT, did you take the ENTIRE CAT (including the Essay and IR sections)?
3) Did you finish any of the sections early? Did you have to rush (and guess on a bunch of questions) just to finish any of the sections?

To answer your question about the CATs, you really have more CATs than you need. You should plan to take 1 CAT/week, but taking more than that is really not necessary.

Hello there,

I am planing to take GMAT towards the end of the April.
My target score is 790. Currently my projected verbal score is 31-38.

Can you please suggest me that how i can improve my verbal score to 46-48 range.

To me RC seems to be toughest specially in case of hard questions.

Also, I am planning to take following practice tests:

Manhattan -6 + 1 free
Magoosh - 2 tests
GMAC Prep -2 tests.

As i am planning to take GMAT somewhere towards end of April, could you please suggest
how should I plan my practice test. Should I take all of them in last 15 days or how .

Regards,
Neetu

You are setting yourself up for frustration by setting up a hard target score of 790. Any score above 730 would get similar response from the adcom. Of course, higher is better but then you cannot have both a time constraint and a hard target score. Going from 650 to 750 is the toughest 100 point jump. It really isn't the way it was in school/college where if you slog, you see a proportional increase in your score. The effort required for every 10 points after 650 is much more than that required to jump 10 points after 550.

You have only mentioned practice tests. Which curriculum are you going to follow to work on conceptual understanding and then, from where are you going to practice questions? I suggest you to get hold of the entire curriculum of a test prep company and then go through all of it with special emphasis on Verbal - improvement in RC comes from dedicated long term effort. Along with that, work hard on CR and SC which are more reasoning based. If you are very good in 2 of these 3 question types, your Verbal can go up to 41-42.
Alongside, work on Quant to raise your score up to 50-51. Check out my blog for discussions of advanced concepts: https://www.gmatclub.com/forum/veritas-prep-resource-links-no-longer-available-399979.html#/categor ... er-wisdom/
A Q50/51 and V41/42 would be a much more realistic target and would give you about 760. Also, don't forget to focus on IR. A 5 or above is fine in IR.
