‘identical with’ or ‘identical to. which one is idiomatic correct? :?

"Identical with" is commonly used, but both "identical with" and "identical to" works fine.

It seems both versions are correct, though "Identical to" is more common in the American English.
I have seen a few explanations but I still don't know which one to believe :-)
Wiktionary agrees with the "identical to" http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/identical
