Solution

Given
In this question, we are given that
• Two equations of x and y: 3x + 4y = -8 and x – 2y = 1/2

To find
We need to determine
• The value of x

Approach and Working out
If we multiply the 2nd equation by 2, we get 2x – 4y = 1

Adding this with the first equation, we get 3x + 4y + 2x – 4y = -8 + 1
Or, 5x = -7
Or, x = -7/5

Thus, option B is the correct answer.
