$$\frac{(8 − x)}{(x + 1)}$$ = x.

Cross multiplying gives $$x^2+x = 8-x$$ or $$x^2+2x = 8$$.

then $$x^2 + 2x − 3 = 8-3 = 5$$.

D is the answer.
