(D) between 3 and 6

Keep in mind that:

$${a^3} - {b^3} = (a - b) ({a^2} + ab + {b^2})$$

Hence:

$$2 \frac{(a^3 - b^3)}{a (a + b) + b^2} = 2 (a - b) \frac{(a^2 + ab + b^2)}{a^2 + ab + b^2} = 2 (9 - 8) = 2$$

Thus, the correct answer is C.

$$\left( * \right)\,\,{\rm{when}}\,\,\,{a^2} + ab + {b^2} \ne 0$$
