given
retail price - discount price = 45
let retail price = x
so discount price ; x*.8
solve for x ; x-.8x = 45 ; x= 225
so 20% discount ; 225*.8 ; 180

let retail price be = x

retail price after a discount of 20% = 0.8x

he saves 45 = 0.2x (equal to discount)
x = \(\frac{45}{0.2}\)

amount of money that he paid = 0.8x = \(\frac{0.8*45}{0.2}\)= 45*4 = 180

C is the answer

Using ratio and proportion.
20%(discount on cost of desk):$45
80%(amount paid for the desk):y
y=80*45/20 = $180

Hence C.

Even though answers were already provided, I find this solution easier. Hope it helps.

Given 20% = 45 (discount)
Thus 100% = 225 (original price)

How much paid? = original price - discount
180 = 225 - 45

We can let n = the retail price of the desk and create the equation:

0.8n = n - 45

45 = 0.2n

225 = n

So he paid 0.8 x 225 = 180 dollars.

Answer: C

Logic I:

Let the retail price be 100.

Discount 20 % ($20) so Mark pays 80% ($80).

For 100 ------------ 20 (Discount)
? ------------ 45 (Given Discount)

=> ? = \(\frac{100*45 }{ 20}\) = 225

=> 225 - 45 = $ 180

Answer C.

Logic II: Discount is 20 % and Mark saves $45.

That means Retail price * 20% = 45.

=> \(\frac{100*45 }{ 20}\) = 225

=> 225 - 45 = $ 180

Answer C.

Let cost of the product be X
20%= 1/5

1/5x= 45
x= 5*45
=225

Don't forget to subtract the discount from this i.e. 45
225-45=180
