I go with E. The modifying phrase 'a pracitce fostered by modern ... methods' would modify 'the use of single strain of plant....' appropriately.

A,B,D all have improper modifier for 'single strain of plant is used... '. Also, in A and B, the pronoun 'it' refers to the plant as opposed to the practice.
C is plain awkward.

E it is.

in A the pronoun 'it' reference is ambigious so A is out. In C is out as we have 2 independent clauses seperated by a comma. 'as is fostered' in B is not idiomatic.

It is either D or E.

E changes the meaning of the sentence - it stresses on the 'use of a single strain' rather than stressing on 'the use of single strain over a widfe area'.

The answer is D.

I agree E is the best choice

Why not C? What makes E a better choice over C?

Structure of C is

(absolute phrase) A practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods,

IC a single strain of plant used for a given crop over a wide area
increases the likelihood that the impact of a single crop disease or pest will be disastrous.

Can anybody explain..

E for me.
A is out due to incorrect structure.

Same logic for B. The correct structure should be

If a single......of plant is used.....................it will increase......

C changes the meaning

D is also has slight aberration from meaning. As it is emphasizing on A single plant and not its use.

E sounds balance and fit.
