If all of the employees of Company K who worked there last January are still there, how many employees does Company K have now?

(1) Last January the ratio of the number of male employees to the number of female employees was 2 to 3.
(2) Since last January, Company K has employed 400 new male employees and no new female employees, raising the ratio of the number of male employees to the number of female employees to 3 to 4.

1) Last January the ratio of the number of male employees to the number of female
employees was 2 to 3.
2) Since last January, Company K has employed 400 new male employees and no
new female employees, raising the ratio of the number of male employees to the
number of female employees to 3 to 4

1. M:F = 2:3 (or M/F = 2/3) --> 3M = 2F
2. (M+400):F = 3:4 OR (M+400)/F = 3/4

4(M+400) = 3F
4M+1600 = 3F

From 1: 3M = 2F --> 9M = 6F
From 2: 4M+1600 = 3F --> 8M + 3200 = 6F = 9M
Therefore, M = 3200.

From 1: 3(3200) = 2F
9600 = 2F
F = 4800

So, the number of employees NOW is:
(3200 + 400) + 4800 = 8200

I think the answer is 8400.

(1) $$\frac{m}{f}=\frac{2}{3}$$, only the ratio is given, hence clearly insufficient to determine the numerical value of employee.

(2) $$\frac{m+400}{f}=\frac{3}{4}$$. The same as in (1). Not sufficient.

(1)+(2) Two different equations, two variables, hence we can calculate $$m$$ and $$f$$. $$m+f+400$$ would be the # of employees now.

Two different equations, two variables

Yeah, that's the key!
