If, for an office, the total expenditure for computers, software, and printers was $54,000, what was the expenditure on computers? (1) The expenditures for printers were 30 percent greater than the expenditures for software. (2) The total of the expenditures for software and printers was 65 percent less than the expenditures for computers. _________________ examPAL Representative Joined: 07 Dec 2017 Posts: 890 Re: If, for an office, the total expenditure for computers, software, and [#permalink] ### Show Tags 16 Oct 2018, 00:50 Bunuel wrote: If, for an office, the total expenditure for computers, software, and printers was$54,000, what was the expenditure on computers?

(1) The expenditures for printers were 30 percent greater than the expenditures for software.

(2) The total of the expenditures for software and printers was 65 percent less than the expenditures for computers.

Since we know the total, all we need to know is the expenditure for software + printers, and subtract this from the total.
We'll look for statements that give us this information, a Logical approach.

(1) This has many solutions and does not give explicit numbers.
Insufficient.

(2) This gives us exactly what we need! (if we label x as the expenditure of the computers, then we have one equation with one variable and therefore one solution)
Sufficient.

We have no relationship between the cost of computers and that of printers and software here. INSUFFICIENT

(2) The total of the expenditures for software and printers was 65 percent less than the expenditures for computers.
If cost of computer was $$x$$, then the combined cost of cost software and printers is $$0.35x$$
$$x+0.35x=5400$$
$$x=\frac{5400}{1.35}$$
$$x=4000$$
SUFFICIENT
