If [x] is the greatest integer less than or equal to x, what is the value of [-1.6]+[3.4]+[2.7]?

(A) 3
(B) 4
(C) 5
(D) 6
(E) 7

Some function [] rounds DOWN a number to the nearest integer. For example [1.5]=1, [2]=2, [-1.5]=-2, ...

Thus [-1.6]+[3.4]+[2.7]=-2+3+2=3.

You are asked what the closest lesser integer value to [x] is.

[-1.6] = -2.0
[3.4] = 3.0
[2.7] = 2.0

Therefore , answer is: -2.0 + 3.0 + 2.0 = 3.0

Option A.

[-1.6] = -2
[3.4] = 3
[2.7] = 2

-2 + 3 + 2 = 3

[2.7] = 2 as [x] is less than x

Since the question says integer <= x
[-1.6]= -2
[2.7] = 2
[3.4] = 3

so,
-2+3+2 =3

Remember that an integer is a "whole number" (either positive or negative), or 0. Thus, if we want to know the greatest integer less than or equal to, for example, 2.1, the answer would be the integer 2, because the integer 2, in this case, is the largest integer that is less than 2.1. Similarly, the greatest integer less than -2.4 would be -3, because the integer -3 is the largest integer that is less than -2.4. Note that in each case, we have rounded down, because of the "less than" requirement stated in the question stem.

We first need to determine the values for [-1.6], [3.4],and [2.7]. Since the notation [x] means the greatest integer less than or equal to x, we will round down each value in the brackets. Therefore,

[-1.6] = -2

[3.4] = 3

[2.7] = 2

We sum these three integers:

-2 + 3 + 2 = 3

My question is when we say 'less than equal to' --> it means; we take the smaller integer closest to it?
so for -1.6 it is -2 (coz -2 is less than -1); and 3 for 3.4 and 2 for 2.7 and so on?

Thank you!

Question - I first approached this question by straight away adding -1.6 + 3.4 + 2.7 but how come we have to find out what each individual value is worth before combining them? Thanks!

Let me ask you - what is the question:

What is the value of [-1.6] + [3.4] + [2.7] = ?

OR

What is the value of [-1.6 + 3.4 + 2.7] = ?

Oh okay so because each value is with in its own bracket it needs to be solved first. Thanks!

That is correct

So less than or equal to would be like this -> [1.6] = 1 or [-2.1] = -3 or [-5] = -5 ;
