Ig Gunther's age now is G, his age 10 years ago would have been (G-10).
Mason currently is= 2(G-10)= 2G-20

Gunther 4 years from now= G+4
Mason 4 years from now= 2G-20+4
=2G-16

Sum of Mason and Gunther's age= 2G-16+G+4
= 3G-12

We want to know (M+4) + (G + 4), or M+G+8. We should write M in terms of G. Given that
M = 2 (G - 10), this expression can be written as M = 2G - 20. All that is left is to subsitute back into the original equation. (2G-20) + G + 8 = 3G - 12

(A) 3G/2 + 3
(B) 3G + 28
(C) 3G – 12
(D) 8 – G
(E) 14 - 3G/2

MANHATTAN GMAT OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

D and E can be eliminated: Gunther must be at least 10 years old, in order for him to have had a nonnegative age “10 years ago” and in order for Mason to have a non-negative age now. We can therefore eliminate D and E, as both choices will give a negative result when G > 10.

The correct answer is in fact C.

M = 2 x (G-10) = 2G - 20
(M+4) + (G+4) = (2G - 20 + 4) + (G + 4) = 3G - 12

We can create the equations:

M = 2(G - 10)

M = 2G - 20

So the sum of the ages 4 years from now is:

2G - 20 + 4 + G + 4 = 3G - 12

Answer: C
