(1) if 1/2 of the gas in tank x were pumped out, the tank would be filled to 1/3 of its capacity
(2) if .75 kiloliter of gas were pumped into tank x, it would be filled to capacity

I narrowed it down to C or E.

The correct answer is C.. but I just dont understand how to figure out mathematically why its C.

1) It can be concluded from this statement that the tank is currently filled to $$\frac{2}{3}^{rd}$$ of its capacity. But we do not know what the capacity of the tank is. Insufficient.

2) We do not know what the capacity of the tank is or to what extent the tank is already filled. Insufficient.

1 & 2 together.,

The tank is filled to $$\frac{2}{3}^{rd}$$ of its capacity. So filling $$\frac{1}{3}^{rd}$$ of its capacity would fill the tank. So, 0.75 kiloliters is $$\frac{1}{3}^{rd}$$ of its capacity. So, the capacity of the tank is simply 0.75*3. Sufficient.

Lets say The total capacity of the tank = T
Current amount of gasoline in the tank = C
Question asks the value of C

Statement 1- if 1/2 of the gas in tank x were pumped out, the tank would be filled to 1/3 of its capacity
C - (1/2)C = (1/3)T
(1/2)C= (1/3)T
C= (2/3)T
Value of T is unknown. Thus insufficient

Statement 2- if .75 kiloliter of gas were pumped into tank x, it would be filled to capacity
C + 0.75 = T
C= T - 0.75
Value of T is unknown. Thus insufficient

Statement 1 & 2-
C= (2/3)T -----(Statement 1)
C= T - 0.75 -----(Statement 2)
(2/3)T = T - 0.75
(1/3) T = 0.75
T = 3 * 0.75 = 2.25
Value of T is 2.25 and thus we can calculate the value of C as well. Thus Sufficient
