If taxi fares were $1.00 for the first 1/5 mile and $0.20 for each 1/5 mile there after, then the taxi fare for a 3-mile ride was

a) $1.56
b) $2.40
c) $3.80
d) $4.20
e) $2.80

[Reveal] Spoiler: My Doubt
1dollar=1/5mile, so 5 dollars = 1 mile

then, 1/5 dollar=1/5 mile, so 1 dollar = 1mile

so 3miles/7dollars, approximately equal to $4.20

where am I wrong???

I wonder why did you write "3miles/7dollars" in your solution.

Anyway, the question says:

The taxi charges $1 for the FIRST \(\frac{1}{5}miles\). And any additional \(\frac{1}{5}mile\) is charged at a rate of $0.20.

How many \(\frac{1}{5} miles\) are there in 3 miles? 15, right?

1 mile has five \(\frac{1}{5} miles\) parts.
3 miles have fifteen \(\frac{1}{5} miles\) parts.

The first part is charged @ $1.00 per part.
Rest 14 parts are charged @ $0.20 per part.

Total Fare=1*$1.00+14*$0.2=$1.00+$2.8=$3.8

Ans: "C"

In 3 miles , initial 1/5 mile charge is $1
rest of the distance = 3 - (1/5) = 14/5
rest of the distance charge = 14(0.2) = $2.8 (as the charge is 0.2 for every 1/5 mile)

=> total charge for 3 miles = 1+2.8 = 3.8

Answer is C.

Equation should be the following:

1($1) + 14($0.20) = $3.8

3 Miles can be divided in 3/(1/5) = 15 equal part...

Charges for First mile part = $ \(1.00\) ,

Distance left = 14 parts

Charges for the next 14 parts = 0.20 * 14 => $ 2.8

Total charges = 1.00 + 2.8 => $ 3.80

Hence, Correct answer will be (C)
