c

Dm = males in drama club
Df = females in drama club
Mm = males in music club
Mf = females in music club

The question is asking what is the value of (Dm+Mm)/(Dm+Df+Mm+Mf).
Only c gives all values need to calculate above equation.

I went with E for the reason that a person can be member of both clubs at the same time.

Do you know - the members in Drama club and Music club are mutually exclusive?

GMATTIGER, could you explain this more clearer, please. Or, maybe, someone else. What do you mean by saying they are mutually exclusive? How can this be? I do not get it... picked choice C...

Will kudos for clarity.

Here, we need to know whether some people might belong to both the drama club and the music club - that's what GMAT TIGER is getting at when he asks if the clubs are mutually exclusive. If we knew that no one belonged to both clubs, the answer would be C (and 25/36 would be male), but if some people might belong to both clubs, we might have, for example, 10 men who are in both clubs, 5 men and 1 woman in the drama club only, and 10 women in the music club only, leaving us with 15/26 who are male. Of course there are many other possibilities.

I think that the OA is C
And if nothing is explicit, you cannot assume that there are members of both club
e will be the answer if some of the members are members of both club

Its C as we cannot make assumptions unless given.

Are we making here an assumption that both the sets are not mutually exclusive? This information is not mentioned in the question anyway.
Also do we need to assume similar information when not given in GMAT ques?

Nope. We are refraining from assuming that they are. This doesn't mean that we are assuming that they aren't. Instead, we are acknowledging the possibility that they may not be.

Also do we need to assume similar information when not given in GMAT ques?

...not sure I know what you mean by "similar information".

In DS, we can only ever make (and should always make) 2 assumptions:
--The statements provide TRUE information
--The statements will never contradict each other.

To Kaplan GMAT Instructor,

I am not clear. Should we assume here that there are no common members between these clubs?

Hi rpgmat,

We should not assume anything, yes or no. We have no idea whether or not there is any overlap--there could be maximum possible overlap, with all 10 music men in the drama club and the 1 female drama clubber in the music club, but there could also be no overlap at all. And, depending on the overlap (or lack thereof), we get different answer to the percentage of male students in the new, combined club. Since this unknown variable affects our answers, it means the question is unanswerable--and that means that the Data Sufficiency answer is (E), the statements are NOT sufficient even TOGETHER.

I'll chime in. The OA is E.

Although this question comes from the GMATPrep #2 CAT, it is very poorly worded (I hope I don't get a question like this on the test). It assumes that men can be members of both clubs, without explicitly saying so. I picked C as well, and got it wrong.
