If there are 12 desks in the front row of a classroom, in how many ways can 3 students be seated next to each other?

3 students take 3 adjacent desks. sit them on one side and then move towards the other, taking one more seat at a time, you will need 9 moves, plus 1 that accounts for the original location, that makes it 10 or 12-2.

oh yes yes. Was doing it for 10 instead of 12 seats under the 2 minutes pressure to conform!

Most of the problems here are GMAT tough, so even if you take 3 min, it won't hurt you.
