If $$x^2 – 1 ≤ 8$$, what is the smallest real value x can have?

(A) –9
(B) –6
(C) –3
(D) 0
(E) 3

Clean (C) -3 as

$$-3^2 – 1 = 8$$, Answer must be $$(C) -3$$

If $$x^2 – 1 ≤ 8$$, what is the smallest real value x can have?

(A) –9
(B) –6
(C) –3
(D) 0
(E) 3

x^2 ≤ 8+1
x^2 ≤ 9
-a ≤ x ≤ a <=> x^2 ≤ a^2
so,
-3 ≤ x ≤ 3 => least value -3
option A
