x^2+5x-14=0
x^2+7x-2x-14=0
x(x+7)-2(x+7)=0
(x-2)(x+7)=0

Hence
either x-2=0 => x=2
or x+7=0 => x=-7

But it is mentioned in the question statement that x is positive.

So x=2.

Just to post a different approach, the question is for positive value of 2...so Only D or E will be the answer. Substitute these in the equation to see which satisfies.

Answer is 2 (D)

If x is a positive integer such that \(x^2 + 5x − 14 = 0\), what is the value of x ?

A. −7
B. −5
C. 0
D. 2
E. 5

\(x^2 + 5x − 14 = 0\)

Or, \(x^2 + 7x − 2x − 14 = 0\)

Or, \(x ( x + 7 ) − 2 ( x + 7 ) = 0\)

Or, \(( x + 7 ) ( x − 2 ) = 0\)

So, \(x = 2\) or \(x = −7\)

Answer will be (D) \(x = 2\)

x^2 + 5x − 14 = 0

(x + 7)(x - 2) = 0

x = -7 or x = 2

Since x must be positive, 2 is the correct answer.
