not sufficient because we do not know anything about X

1. x<0
any value for x <0 will lead to Y=0.

2. y<1

now it is given y=x+|x|.
hence,y should be 2x(if x is positive) or else 0.
in no case y is not going to be a negative integer...
it is given y<1
hence the value of y should be a nonnegative integer.
0 is also a non-negative integer hence,we can say tht the value of y=0.

hence statement 2 is also suffucient.

What about Y having a value of 2X when x is positive? That would give you a number of different values of y fo different values of x.[/quote]

y is an integer so y=0,-1,-2 ..................

if X is positive then 2x is positive y <1 and integer per statement 2

so y has got to be 0

The minimum that y can be is 0. Since y is an integer and is <1, it must equal 0.

D too.

1 says x is -ve integer. y = 0 given that x is -ve.
2 says y cannot be -ve. if so, then y can only be 0.

Really confused with the propeties of Zero? Read that Zero was neither positive nor negative? Also pleas elet me know if zero is even?
Request someone to throw light on the properties of ZERO?

(1) |x| = -x; y= -x+x = 0
(2) For y to be integer, |x| + x = an integer. if x<0 then y=0. If x>0 then y=2x (not possible as y<1). Hence y=0
